Most start with a 1911 or a CZ design. Good Luck [8D]

Lots of things to consider caliber, round counts, frames. uspsa.co is a good place that talks about equipment. STI and SVI appear to be the best frames to use. Most all of the big name builders use them as platforms. Brownells is the parts place. Might be better off just to buy a new race gun. 0 -
You are probably better off building it in 38 super comp to eliminate the feeding problems associated with the 38 super. tyhe super comp is the same as the super, but the rim is the same size as the case, not larger.

Ditto what richbug said. You use the same parts, but just reload with .38 Supercomp brass. However, since the ban on 9x19 major has been lifted, a lot of people are starting to build them to take advantage of cheap brass.
I suggest you check out the forums at www.brianenos.com . It is probably single best source on all things IPSC related on the internet. The wealth of knowledge on IPSC guns and stuff is unmatched anywhere else. You will find National and World champions occasionally posting, along with big name gunsmiths.
For parts, I personally suggest an STI/SVI frame as a starting point. I personally prefer McCormick titanium hammers and match sears. The titanium wears faster than tool steel, but nothing is lighter and gives as light a trigger pull with as fast a locktime. Lots of good barrels are available from Briley, Bar-sto, Nowlin, etc.0 -

Exactly what is a "Race" gun and why is it called that? 0 -
A "Race" gun is a pistol designed for fast and accurate shooting. Most are used in competition. I have seen and shot several that RSE Custom has built. All I can say is that they are sweet. I might be building me another soon.
