Hey; New here. I purchased a Universal model .30cal carbine with a broken stock. My question is, will a military surplus type stock fit on this rifle? Thank you much for your help. D.B. 0 -
Get some boiled linsead oil or Birchwood Casey Tru Oil
and hand rub it in. Let dry between coats.
Use your hand and rub it until you feel heat on the wood

I would go with linSpeed oil.

I will take a third position here and suggest Watco Danish Oil Finish to try and renew the original look.. If the stock is heated with a hair dryer and Watco is applied, it will be absorbed into the wood and not leave a surface coat. After application, wipe completely dry and follow instructions for drying time. Even if there is some oxidized varnish, Watco can possibly brighten it up while providing future protection. Should the Watco treated wood not meet your expectations, absolutely no harm has been done. Watco is an excellent sealer for either of the two previously mentioned finishes. I agree with He Dog[Oh NO Not Again[B)]] in using Linspeed. I find it much easier to apply, and providing a much more mellow sheen without the need of rubbing compounds.

I use both for different things, but I would lean toward the Watco for a deep sealed hand rubbed finish. I have used linseed oils on military keepsakes, and it works fine. But if you want to go with a more finished look later you have to draw the linseed oil out first with a solvent.
Linseed oil really never 'dries', it just stops soaking in. The Watco will soak in well, and after about the 4th coat, you will see a fine finish beginning.
Be sure to have a clean place to work, some 600 grit sandpaper, some 000 steel wool, clean rags, a willing forearm and a good bit of time. Sand, wool , Watco, sand, wool, Watco, Wool, Watco , Wool Watco , Watco , Watco, or something like that.
If we do not hang together we will certainly hang separately.0
