M1 carbine in the box
Hello Ya'll
I strolled up to a yard sale on sat, started talking to the ole guy. He has this universal mi carbine in the original box with all the paper work, two 15 round mags, a universal scope mount in the original package. It also has a box of uinversal m1 ammo with a sears price sticker on it 4.99 for 50 rounds. And the gun has a green web sling on it.Sez he never fried it. Price 150.00 The box has a picture of the carbine on and the adress on it, looks sixities or seventies. My question is what is the quality of these guns and how do they shoot? I bought it because I am a sucker for a gun in the original box, no matter how the quality of the gun is. Thankyou Beltfed

I have not heard good things about the Universal M1 carbine. I will let some one more knowledgeable about them speak to your question. [8D]

Former division of Iver Johnson. Quality is inconsistent.
You didn't state the model, but ... don't make a lot of difference.
Model 1000 18 inch bbl. at 100% has BB of $229
Model 1003 16, 18 or 20 inch bbl. at 100% has BB of $285
Gun show or auction venue with the other goodies you may see $300+
So the "net" is that for $150 you got a good buy, maybe not a good carbine, but a good buy.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
The early Universals had newly-made receivers & mostly USGI parts. As production continued, the company used more & more parts that were made by Universal, & quality of the guns spiraled downward. Due to a combination of poor product design & poor quality control, many Universals can be made to fire out-of-battery (i.e., when the bolt is not fully closed). While I am not aware of any cases where one actually blew up, the possibility is real - & likely lethal.
I urge you to have it checked out by a gunsmith before firing. If he determines that it is not safe to fire, sell it for parts; they are generally not repairable.

I agree with Neal. A poor guality gun at any price is not a bargain!!For myself, any Universal has been "Thanks, but no Thanks"
Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob0
