S&W date of manufacture?

Can someone give me a year of manufacture on a S&W M64? It's owner related the serial to me as 56247.

Any info on what years the 64's were produced?

  I don't think that's the serial number, it should start with a letter.Get the number off the butt.

  You didn't get the full s/n. Get the owner to give you the prefix which my be a D or 1D
  
  1st production year for M64 is 1970 but can't get any closer on production year without the prefix.

  Yep. Should have a letter prefix for serial number. Made from about 1970-71 to about 1992.
