This is a rule dreamed up by your local station manager; the UPS Tariff does not require any specific type of container for firearms. You may want to complain to the station manager or corporate management.

UPS rules do permit counter personnel to inspect any package to be certain that the contents are not hazardous, & to determine whether or not they are properly protected against damage during shipment. This is nothing new.

I went to UPS to ship a long gun today and was charged an extra $5.80 because it required a signature for receipt. That's a new charge to me.

Here's a thought or two for your entertainment. First, labelling your package as a handgun, or telling the counter person that it is a handgun is inviting someone in their organization to steal it. In fact, the UPS handgun theft problem became so large that they now insist that you send it 1st day air. We can speculate that (1) the increased fees so generated help to pay their claims for stolen guns (or their increased insurance premiums due to the stolen guns) and, (2) that his puts fewer larcenous employees in the chain of custody, or (3) that the problem was just seen as a chance to profit. Now, if you tell them that your box contains clock parts, carburetor parts, geological hand specimens, or whatever, they will have absolutely no interest in opening it. Further, when you insure it for its legitimate value, they won't protest, because who knows what such things are worth. Most likely your package will arrive at its destination, but suppose it doesn't. You ask to be paid by the insurance. Again, let me stress, the fair value. So, what will happen? Will they say, "No, we won't pay $xxx.xx because you shipped a handgun instead of clock parts?" NO--because if the package was truly stolen, they don't know what was in it, and you're not dumb enough to tell them. Ethically, there is no dishonesty at work here, because your package is missing and you paid for the insurance and are entitled to be reimbursed. Now, of course, this is all hypothetical, as you're probably breaking one of the many excess and unnecessary laws we have in this over-regulated society; but then again, if UPS would fire, and the F.B.I or A.T.F.E. arrest and prosecute the people responsible for stealing the guns in interstate commerce, such deception wouldn't be necessary, would it?[:(!]
