help on ID of S&W snub 38 sp
O great and all knowledgeable experts on the forum I need some help with the ID of a snubby I traded for. Its not in my book and the closet thing I can find to it on gun broker was listed as a pre-model 10. in all the places you would find the model # it has 4115.serial #5980xx.it has "Smith & Wesson 38s&w spc.ctg" on the barrel. it has a small smith and wesson stamp on the left side and made in the USA on the right. Its on a larger frame than my two other snubby 38's and a 2" barrel.thanks in advance for ant help

Is it 6-shot or 5-shot?
Sounds like a snubbie Military and Police. That's what the Model 10 was called before it was a Model 10.

Can you post a pic of it?

sorry I should have stated its a six shot in about 95% and it has no pre-fix letter before the serial # just the numbers,it has matching numbers on the frame ,cylinder and under the barrel.I can not figure out how to post a pic so I threw it in a 3 day auction with a ridicules price so i could show pics, case hardened trigger and hammer

That looks like a pre-war M&P, also known as the .38 Hand Ejector. Looks to be in nice shape too.
Somebody with a book can tell from the serial number when it was made, but it was before 1942.
About photography. Natural lighting, no flash. Non-reflective background. Sharpen the focus some.
PS: Might want to end or amend your auction. Your opening bid isn't that far out of line for a collector.

Pre-War 4th change and in top condition in the right market could bring $500 or a little better.
Posting pix to this forum is a problem for a lot of people and your manuver with the auction posting is a clever solution, but next time you do it, put in a very unrealistic price, because as Nunn said your price is close enough that some well healed collector wanting an early snubby might just pay it.

Only thing is, if you want this gun to bring top dollar, you will need better, close up, sharply focused shots. My eyes can't tell from your photos whether the gun has been refinished.
