Simmons Whitetail Classis
First of all, I'd like to say "Hello" to all you folks!!! I sure wish I would have found this place long ago!!!![:)]
I have a question concerning the Whitetail Classic scopes(6.5X20X50). My local gun shop said they would even order rings for it,because I will just "blow" the scope out shooting it on my Ruger M77 in .270! He said it would be OK on my varmint rifle(.220 Swift or .22-250),but not on the .270!! Any imput on this?? Has anybody else had bad experiences with these scopes???

IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.0 -
That scope is fine on that rifle. He's trying t osell you something more expensive probably.
God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?0 -
I personally own and shoot on a regular basis a half a dozen Simmons scopes. Several are the "Whitetail Classic" in 2x10x44, my favorite. Of the bunch I have only had one go bad on me. The good news is that Simmons has a great waranty and all they said was send the return shipping cost. Now for the bad news, they didn't fix it or replace it with an identical scope. They did however replace it with their current product equivalent, so all and all I feel they did right by me. The only better scope waranty that I have first hand experience with is Leupold, but that's another story. Go with the Simmons if it fits your size, price and power needs, you won't go far wrong. Though I would kibiz by saying that on a 270Win I would want more like my 2x10x44 as I can't hold the 24 power still under field conditions. 0 -
I have one on a .338 RUM and it is holding up well. Have been using Simmons for years and had one go bad. The crosshairs disappeared. I sent it back and they sent a replacement that was twice the cost/quality of what I had. Another inexpensive scope w/ great quality is BSA. I have a few and never had any problems. 0 -
Good value scope that I've shot on a number of different calibers w/ no problems.
Although I do question such high magnification. The 270 is a great hunter, but you are talking a scope that is more consistent with varmint hunting and if your planning on doing that there are other calibers that will work much better for you. Sure it is a variable but 6.5 is your bottom end so you still have field more field of vision limitations at the low end than other scopes. Scopes that are 2x7 and 3x9 work great under the vast majority of 270 hunting conditions and will give you a much better field of vision.
However, it's your money and you didn't ask for a recommendation on best magnification, but I thought I would throw it in anyhow.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I have Simmons " Pro Hunter " mod 7711 on a few mod 70's from 375h&h to 264 win mag and NEVER had a problem
Also have a White Tail Classic & a 44 mag series scope and they all work just dandy [^]0 -
Thanks for all the replies!!!! I'm shooting 90 and 100 gr. bullets just for target at the range! If the gun shoots well, I have a Simmons Aetec 2.8x10 to put on it if I decide to use it for hunting.
Thanks again!!!!0 -
I had that same scope on a Savage 10FP in .308. No problems at all. I would buy another. It was about $100 through MidwayUSA.com.
