Smith and Wesson 3953
I have an opportunity to buy a used S/W 3953 (9mm semi-auto) from a retired law enforcement officer. The gun comes with it's own S/W (blue plastic) case and 2 extra 8 rd. mags. This is NOT the newer model 3953 TSW.
The gun looks to be in great condition with only some cosmetic holster wear on the top of the slide. Am told it was fired only about a half-dozen times.
When I pull the trigger with an empty magazine in it, I feel a slight detent before the trigger raises the hammer fully. It doesn't seem to happen when the magazine is out. Is this normal?
What should I expect to pay for this gun. Went on GB and could not find a used one for sale. The Blue Book puts them at about $400.
Thanks for your help.

$400 or less[:D]
Last MSR was over $600, but they are not all that popular in the secondary market.
As for the pistol being shot "half dozen times". If this was the duty or off-duty piece, in this day and time, the officer would have to fire routine qualifiers ... either that or he was in a department the like of which I thought disappeared years ago. However, don't be put off by the fact that it may have a few more rounds down the barrel than original suggested ... they are made to fire a lot of rounds with proper care.
And it is not uncommon to feel a stock trigger "stage".
Update: Oops! Omitted comment about mag. safety, thanks for catching that one William ... it's an important point and I couldn't hold the thought long enought to get it in my reply. Must be "one of those days" [:D]
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
It should go for a lot less than $400.
Used S&W 9mm's are out there in huge numbers, & are difficult to sell. They generally sell in the $200-250 range, with a few of the more desireable models bringing close to $300. Lots of folks are just sitting on them, waiting for the market to recover.
PD trade-ins, especially without high cap magazines, would rank at the low end of desireability.
Don't get me wrong; I think that they are great guns & worth more than they are currently selling for. But, that's no reason to overpay for one.
