The ammo is no longer commercially available. It came out with a marketing strategy that conflicted with the "times" and drew a ton of flak, so much that it was eventually discontinued. It was replaced by the SXT which is equal to if not better in performance and came out with politically correct marketing.

During the height of the frenzy some areas slapped laws on the books banning the ammo. Yet todays Personal Defense "Safety" rounds are sold in the same areas.

There is still some Black Talon out there and it has a stiff price tag on it ... you'd be better off buying Gold Dot HydraShok, SXT, Glaser, RBCD, etc. Because by doing that you take away something that an eager DA can use to try and convit you of a crime if you unfortunately have to use it to defend yourself or others.

A friend of mine just gave me about a box full. I thought if I wasn't suppose to have it that I would find a way to get rid of it. Thanks for the info.

Get youself some milk jugs, fill 'em w/ water and "dispose" of your ammo buy blasting the heck out of them ... mellons and pumpkins are fun too if you have a source for getting some over ripe ones.

Don't use them as a defensive load as that is just asking for extra grief at a time when that is the last thing you want.

Actually, BT ammo was developed to meet performance standards developed by the FBI. They met those standards quite nicely. Advertising for the commercial market, plus fears of surgeons accidentally cutting & exposing themselves to AIDS contaminated blood, lead to the outcry that lead to their withdrawal.

The legal ramifications of using certainly types of ammo is an "urban legend". There has never been a documented legal determination in the US in which the judge/jury decision was based upon the type of bullet used.

Neal, good point. The test in a shooting investigation is whether or not it was a justified. If it is justified, then it does not matter what ammo was used.

I have been involved in many such investigations, and the type of ammo used was never a factor.

xxxxxxl, If you are worried about keeping the talons. Fill 2 or 3 one gal plastic milk cartons with water. Line them up and shoot your ammo thru them. I have done this with .45 BT and they mushroom beautifully, and now you have a nice conversation piece. Be careful handling them, the talons are very sharp.

Actually like others said they never discontinued it. They just thru away the black spray paint and renamed it SXT. I find it interesting how even modern Ranger ammo is not commercially avaiable. I'm convinced it's because of an entirely different reason. Money. Cops get ranger ammo in not very fancy boxes of 50. SXT's are sold in very fancy 20 packs with a window so you can see the hardware which will hopefully entice you to spend the high price for those 20 rounds. Notice how the slug is pointed up which isn't the case in any 50 pack Ranger or not.

I actually called Winchester to ask why at one point but got stonewalled. I mean ballistically they aren't superior and like other people said there are plenty of equal or superior HP rounds out there. The reason is police departments wont pay $20.00 for 20 rounds of 40 S&W. I prefer Gold Dots BTW.

Last thing - Hollow points are indeed readily available in NJ. It's one of the few things we haven't had taken away 'yet'.

There was quite a bit of hysteria in the press regarding Black Talon ammo. Two ridiculous accusations were that the marketing was "racially" targeted ie: "black" and that the wound channel was larger due to the "spinning" effect of the petals peeling back with the bullet expansion. Of course for that to occur the rate of twist in the barrel would have to be like 20,000 turns per inch of barrel.

    ....I never met a gun I didn't like!
