.22lr Conversion Kit
I received a flyer about .22 LR converstion kits for pistols and rifles. These kits supposedly are easy to install, and will allow many different pistols or rifles to fire .22LR rounds.
Question: Is it worth it? The price I was quoted is $140 which includes a 10 rd mag.
I do alot of target shooting at indoor ranges. There are a few ranges in the area that won't let me use "rifle caliber" ammo, so I'm limited in the places I can shoot my AR-15 carbine. The savings on ammo would be another obvious advantage.
Any known problems? Any chance I could damage my rifle?
Thanks for your insight.

a lot of police forces use them. bbls tend to lead up. you have to stay on it to clean your gun. remember, nothing works as well as the real thing. conversions convert. anytime you convert, you sacrific something one way or another. most people use 22 AR conversions to practice trigger pull and to shoot within range rules as you are. hope this helps.

You didn't mention mfg, but if its a Ciener, it doesn't get any better.

I have a Ciener conversion unit that I bought used. Have put several thousand rounds through it without a problem. I was so impressed, I called the company. J.A. Ciener told me that one can easily expect ten thousand rounds without any problems.
I also have a Colt Ace II conversion unit. It's more choosy about its ammo and required a break in period. it shoots best with hyper velocity ammo like CCI Stingers. Stingers are relatively expensive and I'm in the process of trying Federal Hyper-Velocity and Aguilla ammo from Natchez Shooters Supply.
The mags for the Ciener sell for 35.00 each from the factory. Real Colt mags are around 40.00 or 50.00 if you can find them. Aftermarket mags for the Colt unit don't seem to work as well as the originals. Bought some from Sportsmans Guide and returned them due to poor performance.

Fouling can be a problem and the extent of the prolem appears to be related to the barrel twist rates and to a lesser extent the barrel length too.
Ciener puts out a very good product. Be leery of some of the other stuff, especially those coming out of Italy.

In fact, I bought the Colt conversion unit first, then the Ciener. After using the Ciener unit, I wouldn't waste my time with anything else, even the Colt.

I bought a reconditioned unit with 10 round mags buried in white plastic the size of 20 rd 5.56 govt.
It worked great but after shooting the 22lr and when firing a 223, I got a light spray in the face. I guess lead shavings collect at the gas port and get blasted back into the action from the high pressure
5.56 round. Shooting glasses are a must.0 -
Warning:if you have problems with one of JAC's products you can expect poor product support as well as poor customer service in general. The owner has an extremely poor attitude toward his customers. You can see this for yourself if you look at the NFA discussion board at www.subguns.com Ciener posts under the initials "JAC". Just do a quick search by poster and I think you'll be amazed at his attitude and ego.

I bought the Ciener, then wondered why? It doesn't hit the same place as the original caliber. I just bought a dedicated upper and use it.
Thanks, Grizztribefans@sssnet.com0 -
Depends on why you buy the conversion. I like to shoot for hours at a time and like the savings of using .22LR vs. .45 ACP. It's strictly financial.
