Recommendation on scope for Rem 597 .17 HMR

My son has been shooting his 597 LSS in .22 LR for 4 or 5 years now with a Tasco World Class, 3-9 x 40 scope. I'll likely get some grief for recommending a Tasco product here, but for a rimfire rifle out to 100 yards, I find this scope to be more than satifactory and the price can't be beat. Unfortunately this model is not available with a mil-dot reticle, which would seem be something that would benefit you shooting at a wide variety of ranges. I guess it comes down to what you're willing to spend and what you determine your requirements to be.

Here's another option if Tasco is a consideration and Mil-Dot is a requirement.

    Since it's only a 100 yard weapon..well..maybe a little longer..something in a Simmons..like a Mod. 44Mag, 3x10 power should do the trick..and they aren't that expensive.

A friend will post your bail. A good friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying, "man that was fun!"

Have a Ruger 77/17 that my wife got me for my birthday a couple of years ago. I originally had a leopold on it but ended up pulling it off and putting it on another rifle. Got a BSA sweet 17 from Cabela's. Best darn bang for your buck on that deal. The rifle has always shot well, can shoot 3 shot groups that make one hole at 75 yards (ground hog range. Ground Hogs don't like it much.

Tasco, Simmons, BSA ... all good value scopes.

Check www.midway.com they usually have some very good clearance prices on scopes.

For what your doing you should be able to get a very nice scope in one of the 3 brands mentioned for under $100

I put an older Leupold Vari X II 3-9x 40mm with a duplex reticle on my Marlin .17 VS. Works great on it. I had to do a little looking in order to find the right height rings. In this neck of the woods, you can pick up a decent Leupold 3-9 for $150 - $190 if you are patient. Find one then you don't have to worry about a scope any more.

Worry is the interest humans pay on the debt of miscalculation.
