    Typical mag is putting out 4-600 ft lbs depending on weight. 357 is marginal,even in a long barreled pistol.

    Whatta loada crappa!
    Fiocchi 148gr. jhp (357E) has 720 @ muzzle
    Lapua 150 gr. sjfn (4319214) has 834 @ muzzle
    Lapua 158gr. sjhp (4319218) has 834 @ muzzle
    Federal 180gr. cast core (P357J) has 675 @ muzzle

    Figuring muzzle energy is a relatively easy thing to do if you know the weight of the projectile and its' velocity. A decent chronograph and a few dozen reloads can put you in the right direction.

    If you know it all; you must have been listening.<br>WEAR EAR PROTECTION!

    I hunt with a DW 8 1/2" barrel 357. I shoot Corbon 200gr, mv 1200, energy is 640ft/lbs. Dropped a 150lb doe at 65 yards. There are alot of nay sayers about 357, but alot of game has been killed with them, everything in North America! As long as your a good shoot with your gun, good ammo, and not taking on too much, 357 will be fine. On deer try to keep the shoot under 75 yards, much over that id hard for all most any handgun. I also shoot a ruger 44mag, and 454. It just depends which one I grab first, on the one that gets used that day.

    You can get a pretty close estimate by using : E=MV(squared)/450380

    E= Bullet energy
    M= Bullet mass (in grains)
    V= Bullet velocity (in feet/sec)
    450380 is the constant needed to convert from gr/ft to lb/ft
    7000 gr/lb x (g=32.17)x2

    Works for any cartridge at any range.
