It will work fine and if you do your part you'll have no problems out to 200+ yards. There are component choices for reloading and you can fine tune a load for your gun. Use at least 2 load sources for cross comparison.
Now with all of that said if you do not already own a 221 consider just buying a 223 ... lots of ammo at good prices, no problems with finding reloading components and will still serve you well out to 200+ yards.
I have 221 barrels for my Contenders and I do use them. It's a fine round, but your going to be incurring more expense going that route than 223 which I also have barrels for so I know from experience how both perform in different lengths on the same platform.

amk,
This table is for the 50 grain Hornady VMAX and Re-7 from a 20" barrel. You can use the lighter bullets but I see significantly more wind drift as I go lighter so I stay pretty much with the 45 gr. or 50 gr. VMAX. This makes a terrific combination for a light, short-barreled walking varminter for coyote or groundhogs. I limit my shots to 300 yards and under, less if the wind is up. Re-7 is my working powder but 4227 works fine also. If you want to shoot the 50 gr. bullets, you can consider having the throat extended out a bit to regain some of the powder space lost to the longer bullets. If you stay with the lighter bullets, leave the throat alone.
Best.

thank you very much for the info. the 221 allways fascinated me. had a 223 just looking for something a little different. how about pelt damage on smaller animals like foxes or coon? thanks again,

For the same type bullet/weight the difference in pelt damage should be negligible.
