Hello, My search of old posts didn't come up with anything and I'm hoping for some comments on a possible purchase. Yesterday I was handling a mirror-like finished (nickel plate on alloy I think) S&W 9mm DA pistol with asking price of $300.00 - I am not likely to offer more than $200.00 but I wonder where the value lies, where I might settle. Actually I've always avoided nickel finishes because I've seen the "blistered" ones and just don't know how that can be avoided in humid south Louisiana - maybe okay in Arizona or New Mexico? And the alloy frame makes me wonder. On the other hand it is a pretty thing, the wood is as clean as the metal. I don't think I've ever seen one at a gunshow - as bright as this one is you could see it across the room - and I wonder whether that's a good or bad sign. Thanks for any input. Best, Tim

A relatively small % of the alloy-frame M39's were available from S&W with the nickle plate finish. They usually bring a small premium over the blue finish. I would expect the nickle finish to be as durable as the blue finish, maybe even a little better. If you want REAL durability, get a 9mm in stainless steel.

I think that, pricewise, you are in the ballpark. Lots of people are sitting on a bunch of S&W 9mm's, & they are difficult to sell for more than $200-250. I think that they are undervalued, but, well, that's the marketplace.

HAVE had both blue and bright nickel in the 39 and 59. No problems with the early smith autos, if you only want 8 shots? the 39 is ok. about 260 and tax would be my guess. nambu

Thanks all for the remarks on this pistol. I intend to look at again Monday. Its a private deal so if we can settle at 250 I'll take it.

Mr Saxon - Thanks. Yours is a most encouraging post. I phoned the lad a while ago and reminded him to put it in his car in the morning and we'd meet at his lunch break to look at it again, shoot it and see. I'll let you know what comes of it. Do you do anything special to your nickel-plateds to preserve the finish? The only thing I've got here is my granddaddy's 1899/1902 S&W Military & Police with only the faintest trace of nickel left, and it just has a thin coat of 3-in-1 to keep it smooth.

I may be wrong, but weren't the SW 39 issued to the police departments as one of the first semi-autos and a lot of bad press resulted. I seem to remember LV I believe buying a bunch and then getting rid of them. I don't remember the reason why.
