Minor M1 Garand problem
My gas plug keeps working loose when shooting. After about 30 rounds it is backed out 2 or 3 full turns. It bugs me.
Now, considering what this thing does, I honestly can't see how it would cause a danger. I don't think it will even shoot off, given that at the rate it seems to move, I could fire a few hundred rounds before it would be an issue. Also, I can't see how it would even mess with accuracy, though ANY loose part can't be good.
So the question... what to do? I could just put some of the removable loctite on it, but as often as this part needs to be removed, this would be a pain. Should I get a new plug? Or the piece the plug screws into? Thanks.

How tight are you tigtening it? I use the Garand combo tool and have never had any trouble, maybe 15 foot pounds. I go 300 rounds or so, no issues. A better solution than loc-tite would be a teflon based pipe compound, you just want something to keep it from rattling off, not welded in place.

i have fired over 5000 rds through my primary shooting garand, and i have never tightened that part, or had a problem with it coming loose.
maybe MARK CHRISTIAN cane enlighten us. best regards, mike.

It matters not how tight I tighten it... and I am using M2 ball or published safe NRA recommended equivalant handloads.

I have a similiar problem; switched to 147g Winchester ball, helped a little; retightened; went to the teflon based plumber's tape, single wrap; haven't had any issues since; been about 600 rounds or so.[8D]

Well it is a Danish CMP service grade; the insides of the thing aren't in bad shape at all. I could change the plug but won't replace the whole thing on an otherwise functioning rifle but like the teflon tape idea.

You might try painting the threads on the screw with fingernail polish before you install it. When it dries, it'll help hold it in place, but not so tight you can't take it apart again.
