Winchester Model 1887

I have a Model 1887 lever action Winchester Model 1887 10ga shot gun.
The question I have is that the Serial# is 19003, and the S.P Fjestad Blue Book of Gun Values states that production began with serial number 22148. This is stated on page 1529 of the 23rd edition.

    The bbl is 30 inch.

Is there an explanation for this contradiction, or do I have a rare piece?

    Hello onsetbay...

Fjestad's Blue Book is often full of horse manure[xx(]. A 32" barrel was standard for a Model 1887 10 gauge. I would highly recommend having it researched by the Cody Firearms Museum (it is the only way that you will ever know for sure). Use this link - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/records.cfm

If it turns out to be 100% factory original, that fact will not make it rare... just a slightly earlier specimen than what is currently known (no premium in the value).

onsetbay: Bert is correct on the barrel length. My Winchester book says production began in 1887, s/n 1-7341, 1888, s/n 7432 - 22408, so with that info your gun was made in 1888. If I had a dollar for every error I've found in the "Blue Book" I could buy some more Winchesters!! LOL Just a note: the chanber on this gun 2 & 7/8s and is a black powder gun. don't shoot it until someone who knows has checked it out. Hope this helps. Regards Dave

Not much to add to the technical side. You have a fine old gun and if it is any kind of shape at all get it researched by the folks in Cody.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

    Thank You very much.

I will take the advise and contact Cody.

PS: I rechecked the bbl length and it is 30in.
