Got one in .220 Swift. Like it a lot. Gonna get another one in a better deer caliber, 7 X 57 maybe. 0 -
I can only speak from experience on older #1's chambered in 22-250 and .270 Winchester. I bought both of mine used from folks that had done a little work on the barrels. I think the triggers are stock and are fine for a hunting rifle. The 22-250 will throw 1 1/4" groups at 150 yards if I do my part. The .270 groups at 2 to 2 1/2" groups at 150 yards. It has a shorter barrel (#1 AB model).
I have never had either rifle misfire or fail to eject a shell, which ought to count for something. I have run 300 or so rounds through the 22-250, less than 75 rounds through the .270. The .270 kicks like a Georgia mule. I got a small buck on the last day of the Florida hunting season with it this year. I like the idea of hunting with one. Beware, after you get one or two you will get a sudden urge to acquire different chamberings and models. You could end up with a room full of them if you aren't careful! Good luck
Worry is the interest humans pay on the debt of miscalculation.0 -
Have owned/own several. Right now I'm in the middle of 2 custom projects with them. A 250 Savage and a 500 S&W.

Brownells sell's a THINGY that fits in the forearm and puts tention on the barell, makes them in to a tack driver, Fixed 2 that I know of, I have one in 45-70 and have put 4 round's in to a 1" square at 100 yard's, A friend of mine has one in 30-06 and saw him put 5 in one jaged hole at 100 yard's.[:D][:D][:D] 0 -
I own a #1 in 300 winmag and love it. The extra weight helps with the recoil, but may be a little much for tromping around the woods in the late deer season. I can put in 1" groups all day long at 100 yrds. That may also aided by the Leupold Vari-x II 3-9X40 riding on top. I used to live in NM and used the gun for elk, but had to load lighter (150 grn) for PA witetail. Good gun

Chuck,
Would you please explain a little more about the device from Brownell's that fits in the Ruger #1 forearm to add tension. What is it called? It sounds like what I need for my 257 Roberts which will only group about 3" on a good day. I've tried shims and removing the forearm completely with no improvement. I've looked thru my old Brownells catalog but could not find the item you mentioned. Maybe I need a new catalog. Thanks for any help.0 -
The thing that Chuck referred to is in the supplement to the #56 Brownells catalog. Its called an "accurizer" by Hicks Designs. The description reads "stabilizes the barrel to prevent point of impact shift as barrel heats up. Steel bedding block attaches to receiver extension and gives you an adjustable tensioning screw to regulate barrel movement. Only minor inletting of the forearm required." The catalog number is 419-100-001 The price is listed as $47.96 wholesale or $59.95 retail. Brownells number is 1-800-741-0015. Hope this helps. 0 -
