jc higgins model 38
I'm trying to find any information I can about a Sears & Roebuck J.C. Higgins model 38 (583.74) my mother bought for my father for their first wedding anniversary on 11-22-1951. The patent number listed on the rifle (2552429) is for the firing mechanism only and not the entire gun. I'm not "firearm literate" and would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

My Higgins Model 31 which is a couple years newer has the same model and patent numbers on the barrel, so, I would assume that the 38 is just an earlier designation. High Standard made these and other firearms for Sears. Does yours have the built in sling that retracts into the stock? The J.C. Higgins rifles don't attract a lot of collector interest. I happen to be very fond of my 31 and shoot it a few times yearly. Hold on to it and let it remind you of your dad. 0
