Speer Gold Dot HP's
I loaded up some 240 gr. Speer Gold Dot hollow points for the .44 special last night. Does anyone shoot load/them? I wanted to get some 200 gr. silvertips, but none available, so I opted for the Gold Dots. I normally load the 240 gr. Hornady XTP's but wanted to try something different. The Gold Dot appears to be a well made bullet with a wide cavity and crimping groove. Any feedback appreciated.

Generally speaking the Gold Dots expansion wise are reported to be in the middle of the road. Less than say a PMC Starfire or Federal Hydra Shok, but more than a Hornady XTP. A good all around compromise of penetration and expansion. I'm paraphrasing a April o4 issue of Guns and Ammo concerning premium handgun bullets. I've only shot the Gold Dots in a few factory .45 ACP load so far, but intend to load more in the future. 0 -
They are good bullets. Alot of the Police Dept.s use them for on duty carry. I load some of them in 44 mag., 44 Special, & 40 s&w. Fairly accurate for a self defense bullet too. They claim they will out penetrate the Hydroshock but expand better than the H.XTP which is a better hunting bullet (as stated above)............[8D] 0
