1903 springfield sniper a4 authentication
please help !! i'm a new collector of the 1903 and am having a 1903 a4 sniper sent to me ; my local gun guru says the receivers are craftfully being changed to look like an "a4"; and being reparked"; i've heard about two dicreetly placed marks on the underside of the barrel to help with identifying the "a4?? this one has the correct serial # for a first block sniper #3417xxx
any help?
thanks jim

You need a new guru.
The position of the serial # (on the side of the receiver so that it can be read when a scope is mounted) makes it pretty much impossible to fake an A4 receiver.
The REST of the rifle, though, is subject to alteration, restoration, & fakery. If you would like an amateur opinion of your rifle, send me photos at nmyers@comcast.net Or, you ask the fellows at the Culver Shooting Page M1903/1903A3,1903A4 forum - www.jouster.com
For a professional opinion, you should check out www.scott-duff.com ; however, that would probably take too long for you to return it if you have to ship it to Scott.
