s.gun, I rep a little bit for "UNCLE BUD's" bags, and I have some filled with fine ground walnut hulls(about the same texture of tumbling media) and they work fine! I also have sand filled ones. Filled with the walnut hulls the big ones (15.5") will weigh 11-12 lbs compared to 40+ lbs with sand and they are still stable and a lot less trouble to move around! GHD

I haven't tried the walnut hull filling but found that the lighter weight grain or kitty litter type stuffing causes more bounce away from the bag because of the compressability of the material.

Weavils infest most any grain. Like a small beetle with a "drill" for a nose that bores into the kernel where they lay eggs. More common is the Indian meal moth whose larvae(sp) look like small, white mealworms, which spin webbing on the grain surface, then turn to small brown moths. They and many others infest grain, rice, cornmeal, cereal, etc.....Durn hard to eradicate, 'cause of the immunity to poisons built up over the years...30 years in the grain biz have taught me to not think about what's in that cereal bowl in the morning.....[xx(]

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I made some homemade bags a while back and used rice. I put the rice in a large zip lock bag and then sewed the material around it. It looks like a small pillow, weighs about 12 lbs and works well. I did not realize weavils would get into rice and I guess I need to check it. I've also got the Uncle Buds filled w/sand. Works great, but very heavy.

Thank you for the reply's.I now have about #30 of sand bags I tote when I go shooting and think I will make some with the rice.A lot lighter.

Maybe I can add something in there to keep those little critters in check.Do you think a little lime might work?
