OO buck loaded for law enforcement is loaded to a lower pressure thus causing less recoil. It is usually available with a little looking.

Don't worry about recoil. Worry about penetration. Are there others that live with you? You don't want to be shooting at a bad guy, miss and shoot into another room where a family member might be.

If you live alone, use 00 Buck, and have at it. If there's any chance you might shoot through a wall and hit anyone else, use birdshot/rabbitshot.

At room distances, what you're most likely to be at for home defense, smaller shot is just as effective as larger shot.

Believe me, I've seen the results!

I prefer No. 4 Tactical Buck (27 balls in a 2 3/4" shell verus only 9 in a OO Buck shell).

I did some testing on my own years ago with different sizes of buckshot fired into makeshift interior walls with studs & sheetrock on both sides, etc. to simulate shooting in your home. I settled on #4 buckshot as the best load in terms of doing the job and not over penetrating to the point of endangering other people in the house in other rooms. -- Having said that, I wouldn't be afraid to use #4-#6 birdshot against the baddest person you could find at across the room distances. It would be pretty hard to walk through...........[8D]

I'm reminded of a story my parents told me.

When first married and in their first apartment, my mom was at home and heard someone outside trying the door repeatedly. She called out, "I have a gun." Dad had showed her how to load and shoot his 16 ga. double SxS. She called the police and the guy went away before anything happened. Later she asked my dad if, at a range of 8 feet, if she had shot the guy with the #6 shot which she had loaded, if it would have stopped him. Dad said nothing but rather took her out and shot a board of pine wood, at 8 feet, which absolutely disintigrated. Or at least a center piece of it about 5" in diameter did... he still has the board. He then says, "in answer to your question, with one barrel you would have punched a hole in him like such; with two you would have sawed his head off of his shoulders." Point: I would stick with smaller shot. In a house, it will do the job!

I've got a buddy that has a shotgun that holds 9 shots total and he puts in one slug, one 00 buck, and one 6 shot (and repeats twice more until full). He said his way of thinking is that he might miss with the slug and hit with the other, but if the person's wearing extra thick clothes or even light body armor the slug might get through more than the others.

I use a Glock 10mm for my defensive needs, but my friend has some logic to the varying loads as described above...

Not trying to be a smarta$$ or anything, but, except for the "wall penetrating" issue,I really don't think it would make the intruder a whole lot of difference.

    Temblor,
How about a post about your findings with the sheetrock ? What different shot did you try, etc? I was going to do the same tests this year but would be happy to hear the results of your tests.

I have always loaded all #7.5s but recently have thought about loading some #4 turkey loads after the first #7.5.

I love to tell this story [:D] I went on a call one day on Stock Island (Key West). A women had been drinking all day.. Came home and got mad at her cat. Women was about 200lbs, so she was not small. She got her boyfriend's shotgun; it was full of 00 buck. Remember she is drunk, and could not even walk straight.... She took a shot at the cat, MISSED! put a hole in the floor, cat ran, she shot again, now she put a hole in the side of the trailer, and the trailer next to hers..... The cat must have got on the countertop.. she shot the sink!!! Water was squirting up in the air... then she shot the refrigerator, 00 buck went in the door and out the back and through the wall of the trailer, and a few hit her car.... The cat must have been going NUTS!! Now she shot the TV and 00 went out the front of the trailer and hit the neighbor's car, WOW! what a mess of things she did... What's the moral of this story??? IF YOU DRINK AND HAVE A CAT, DON'T KEEP 00 BUCK IN YOUR SHOTGUN!!!!

It will hurt you, More than it will hurt me..
