Remington 710
My son will be 14 before deer season and is ready for his first centerfire rifle. He likes the looks and feel of the 710 and I like the price. I'd like some feedback from anyone who owns or has fired one of these rifles a lot. How do YOU like it?
Also, he and I could swear we saw one of these chambered for .308 Winchester last year. From looking around a bit, I see that this rifle is not currently chambered for any short action cartridge. Are we confusing the 710 with another rifle we looked at, or did Remington make this in .308 at some point?

These are rifles are chambered in .3006 and .270 only. You will get probably a 50-50 good/bad response from the guys on here on the .710.
We are dealers and sell these rifles but think they are junk. The sleeved bolt is not smooth. The first few we had fell apart on us. We called Remington and they said they didnt have a recall on them but they would polish the bolt/sleeve if we sent them back. We do not recommend these at all.
You can get a Savage package in .308 for around the same price. They do not have clips unfortunately. They are decently built and very accurate though. They also have youth models available.
God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?0 -
I had one in 30-06 for about 3 weeks before i sold it. i'd go with the savage or a used rifle for the money. 0 -
I've sighted in two 710's(or tried to).
Do yourself and your son a favor and take the advise of the previous posters.
BTW,WELCOME!!!

HAVE NOT TRIED ONE PERSONALLY . THE FEEDBACK I'M HEARING IS NOT GOOD IN MOST CASES . THE SAVAGE OR HOWA COMBO'S ARE REASONABLE AND PROVEN TO BE ACCURATE , RELIABLE AND HE'LL LIKE THE FEEL OF THEM AS WELL .
THE HANDI-RIFLE IS ANOTHER GOOD CHOICE AT ABOUT 200.00 YOU STILL CAN AFFORD A GOOD SCOPE AND MOUNTS .
CHECK THE USED RIFLES AVAILABLE HEAR ON G.B. . PERSONALLY THE 710
GETS 2 THUMBS DOWN !!!

I'm very glad that I asked about this model. It looks like we'll check out some other options including the Savage package guns (I see several available on GB at fair prices) and the Howa, which I have no experience with at all.
What's a Handi-Rifle?
Thanks for the help and the welcome, guys!0 -
valudude,
The Handy Rifle is made by H&R/NEF/Marlin,or whatever they're calling it this week.Excellent value,single-shot,break action in a variety of calibers.Very accurate and a great starter rifle. Can also be sent to the factory for new barrel(caliber)for a reasonable price.Check it out.

Ahhh. the NEF single shot break action rifle. That I am familiar with and I agree they are a great value and they shoot well. I think we're looking for a bolt action at this point though. My son has hunted the last two seasons with a 20 ga, 870 youth model which I bought a Hastings, rifled barrel for and it served him well. Due to his size and level of maturity regarding firearms, he's ready for a "real" rifle now. 0 -
have you considered looking at a lever action? 0 -
Jake, while I have nothing against lever action rifles myself, I do feel that the difficutly of handling one safely is a pressure that I don't want to put on my son. Accidental dicharge or bloody thumb, one or the other is bound to occur at some point. 0 -
I've looked at the Winchester mdl 70 Super Shadow set-up at Wally World. It is the same price as the 710, but seems to be of better quality. Has a Simmons scope rather than the Bushnell. Might want to check it out, since is offered in the new WSM's also.

I have brought my own 15 year old daughter and step son through this stage with a couple of Remington 788's in 243 and 308. Neither of them has had any problem shooting a 308 well. But I will warn you about a HUGE problem. Kids beat your guns to death! They constantly scratch them on rocks and lean them up against a wall or truck fender where the rifle slides down and slams the scope or dings the stock.
Make sure he has a cheap scope and Ramline stock until he becomes more concious of not banging the gun around. It will relieve a TON of stress from your shoulders and make the day afield more enjoyable for both of you. The Savage combo fits those criteria nicely and he'll still be using that rifle on an Elk hunting trip in ten years.
....I never met a gun I didn't like!0 -
I suggest checking out a Remington 700 ADL, Savage, Tikka or Weatherby Vanguard before buying a Rem 710. There are a lot of used options out there and a new version of the models listed above will not cost much more than the 710.
I also suggest a wood stock to give your youngster a keepsake.0 -
Actually, right now I think you can find great deals on a Savage without the Accutrigger. These are still great rifles, but everyone wants the new Accutrigger, so grab a deal if you can.[:D] 0
