Other than the floor plate, I think the only other difference between the BDL and ADL is the higher quality of the stock on the BDL, and maybe a more polished finish.

If all he needs is a "shooter", he would do just fine with the ADL.

Lefty has it. The BDL is skip line checkered, gloss finished, maybe a little better wood, with white spaces and forend tip. Except for the floor plate they are mechanically the same. For $350 I could get used to a box magazine.

On The ADL the stock is stronger in the action area and they give better Acc. because of it. (my 2 cent's worth)

Have your friend check out the Howa rifles. Some consider these as improved M700 and for the same $$$ or less he will get the floor plate. The fit and finish on the Howa is better than the ADL. The Howa has a flat bottom receiver which makes a better bedding surface if at some point your friend wants to bed the action. I have an ADL, BDL, and Howa, and consider the Howa as being more equal to BDL than to the ADL. As stated, the Howa will cost less than the ADL.

It sounds like your friend is looking for utility over looks. If that is the case the ADL is a better buy than the BDL in my opinion. I doubt if one person in 5 needs or even uses a floor plate. I don't know when I have seen a shooter or hunter empty the magazine thru the bottom instead of jacking the shells out one at a time with the bolt. If he wants a synthetic stock the appeal of the stock goes out the window also as a synthetic stock on the ADL will look much the same as a BDL. I have owned both ADL and BDL and the only real difference in the two was the fact that the ADL I owned would shoot a tighter group than the BDL. As far as the argument of the ADL being stronger I don't see how since they both are repeaters and the bottom is cut for a magazine on both. Now if the ADL was a single shot with a solid bottom I would agree. We won't get into what I think of white spaces but that is a personal preference not a really objective point. I have never owned or shot a Howa but I have only heard good things about them from other people. AS far as I am concerned the most bang for the buck is probably the 110 Savage. Right out of the box it will usually outshoot any of the above and at a slightly lower price. Just my thoughts and not binding on anyone.

All the differences have been mentioned above between ADL & BDL. If he just wants a gun that will "get the job done" the ADL will fit the bill. -- I hunt with a friend who has an extensive collection of firearms. Probably over two hundred quality guns including rows of top of the line weatherbys. -- What does he deer hunt with? A remington 700 ADL in 270 winchester. Plain walnut stock, blue finish and beat all to heck from years of tossing it in the truck. At last count he was 44 for 45 on blacktail deer in a state that only lets you tag two a year. The one he lost he shot in the last minutes of daylight and it was hit well but he lost it in rough country tracking it in the in the dark when his flash light battery gave out.........................[8D]
