Andy, Welcome to the forum.
I believe the speed of sound is approx 1100 FPS. That is waaaayyy to slow for a .308 bullet. If you loaded ammo that slow, I doubt there would be sufficient gas pressure to cycle your gun.
If your planning to use a suppressor on the rifle, it would muffle the muzzle blast but the bullet would still create its usual miniture sonic boom or "crack", thus defeating the purpose of a suppressor.

There are specialized semi-auto rifles that take or is designed to take subsonic ammunition in .308Win.
But before you take the big step, you'd want to find out what rate of twist your barrel is.
That's not all unimportant when shooting slow and heavy bullets.
It might be possible to work up a load for your rifle - but you would most likely need to have a new set of springs worked out too, if the rifle is not designed for subsonic ammunition.
Due to the more powerfull recoil in ordinary ammunition, the springset is offcourse designed for a certain amount of force.
The problem with subsonic ammunition is the recoil and gas-pressure - the spring-set might be too powerfull for the weak subsonic load to cycle it correctly.
If it's for a silenced/supressed rifle, be sure to use shooting-glasses, because there WILL be a lot of gasses expelled through the cartridge ejection port and rearwards.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.0 -
You might also look at a rifle chambered in .300 Whisper. I'm not sure if any are available in semi-auto, but it is often loaded as a heavyweight 30 cal bullet travelling at subsonic speed.

It can be done on a FAL, but you must open up the gas port
(with a drill) considerably, and close the gas vent all the way. what I saw was using 220 grain bullets at arround 1050 fps. Might as well have been a 45acp. Getting a pistol to work like a rifle is a big thing, getting a rifle performing like a pistol is a little backwards IMHO.

This may be a foolish question but I have to ask,'why would anyone want to shoot sub-sonic ammo from a .308 rifle? What's the purpose?? Enlighten me and probably some other readers also. 0 -
Ballistic-
The main purpose of subsonic .308 rounds would be for use with a suppressor to provide optimum stealth, being as the subsonic rounds would eliminate the supersonic "crack" and the suppressor would muffle the muzzle blast.0 -
I think Ballistic was on the right track. I suspect the original poster might have entered a typo and really meant .380 not .308.
As in like a subsonic 9mm round out of a suppressed mp5.
The joke around my house is that we want one of those movie "silenced .308's". Every sniper movie has one, that would be SO COOL for hunting! The deer would never run when you miss and the neighbors wouldn't call the cops when we shoot bucks out the back window at night!
What?!?!?! It worked for Antonio Banderas in "Assassins" LOL

Clicked on the SAI web site, Very, very interesting HappyNanoq. I hope to GOD that whole industry does a thorough background check before they sell any of those items. It's a crazy world out there and getting crazier by the minute. 0 -
Pretty cool!
But it still would be basically illegal for almost anyone except residents of class III states.
