Gunsmith help needed: "antiqued" finish
I have fallen in love with a finish offered by cimarron on their bp and SAA replicas. I would like to have a couple of my other bp's and SAA's redone in a similair finish--metal and grips look old, brass tarnished, outside metal even pitted a little.
I have talked to a couple of smiths here but what they offer is not much more than stripping the blue off or a vinegar treatment of hte blue ot turn it grey. ANybody know of a gunsmith that could refinish a gun in this way?????

why not just case color it? you know, flame it? 0 -
Just leave it outside on your porch for a week or so. 0 -
Sounds crazy, but just smear, rub, paint, however you want, MUSTARD on the parts you want affected. Leave it on for a day or 2 and wash off. Another trick is to use milk house cleaner (mild acid) on the metal parts, should be available at farm supply stores. Emery

What will Milk HOuse cleaner do? I have, actually, tried ketchup but not mustard. I know that the vinegar in ketchup turns the blue a grey color. Will mustard have a different effect?
Thanks0 -
In truth, I have only used the mustard process on bare metal. It turns the metal dark and gives it a streaked appearance like damascus. I don't know what it will do on blued steel. The milk house cleaner will make the steel look old, like an old rifle that has been patinated. A buddy of mine did this process to a repro Henry rifle and you really couldn't tell the difference between it and an old rifle until you levered the action open and saw the center fire bolt. Emery
