The date of manufacture of the lower determines if it is a pre or post-ban weapon. The post-ban weapons cannot have a bayonet lug, removeable flash supressor, yadda, yadda, yadda... Unless the AWB goes away you may not add any of the banned features to your weapon.

By definition all Colt AR-15s are assault weapons since that exact model designation is named speciaifically in the Crime Bill. Before Colt discontinued civilian sales of the AR-15 in 1989 there were no pre/post ban domestic production firearms and all Colt AR-15s were fitted with bayonet lugs, flash hiders, and many had retractable stocks. It reamins to be seen whether or not Colt will reintroduce the AR-15 as originally issued if the ban sunsets. If the ban sunsets you would be free to take you postban Colt Sporter or Match Target rifle and fit it out with the preban parts in order to create an AR-15 look-a-like.

Thanks guys. That answered my question. What about the three round burst models though? Whats the date on them??? I ask this because I was in Wyoming a 2 years ago and they had them for sale and they had the switch that said safe, fire, and three round burst. Are they considered illegal without having a class three?

Nope they are class 3. ATF gets all buggy eyed over anything that "fires multiple rounds during a single cycling of the trigger device".
