The original lower will work. Some of the 9mm mags come with .223 conversions built on to them. You can by a 9mm block for the .223 and use sten mags. There are a variety of different ways to convert.

There is a little more to it than what has been said. Along with the items you have noted:
    9mm mags,
    9mm mag well conversion kit,
9mm barreled upper with 9mm block
9mm bolt carrier group and charging handle asembly

    You will also need:
    9mm hammer,
    9mm buffer with CAR springs,
9mm stock spacer if you are using a fixed stock rifle.

Of course there are other 'cheaper ways' of converting from .223 to 9mm. However, having the items listed above installed is the way all factory conversions are accomplished. BTW, it is not all that hard to do it right yourself. The only special tool you will need is a nylon punch to keep from marring the receiver when you remove the safety and trigger assembly to install the 9mm hammer.

That is what I was afraid of........too much work involved.

If it was just the upper, bolt magwell, and mags, it would be easy. Oh well...[:(]

keep you eyes on the auctions and hit some gun shows ... occassionally you'll see a complete rifle in this caliber and many times the selling price is no more than what the parts would have cost you to do it.

Now on the other hand I personally don't think 9mm is all that practical unless you looking to shoot at no more than 100+ yards. And if that is the case go by a Kel-Tec as it is a more cost effective way to go.

    True.

I just want it for fun, anyway.........Looks sexy in 9mm.

    Anyway........a true story.....

As a suburban Chicago cop, (who is PRO-GUN!), I went to my chief for a letter to get a LE only Colt in 9mm. He denied me the letter, which is understandable as he is new and doesn't know us well. Our old chief signed letters for us, no problem! That is how I obtained my .223.

I would have loved this at a price of only $600! With 2 20 round and 2 30 round mags! Especially when a pre-ban costs 1500-2000!

I am livid that the "ban" may not sunset! [:(!]

If you get an olympic arms 9mm upper (around $500) you don't have to change the buffer/hammer etc. Just swap the uppers and get a socom mag block ($50) and some sten mags ($3 ea) and you're ready to go. Oly system doesn't have last round bolt hold open and uses a different mag catch, but works well and you can use your stock .223 lower. Mag block slides up from the bottom and is held by factory mag catch. Takes about 2 min to change from .223 to 9mm. Buddy has one and he loves it. Contact stokes (he's a moderator) on www.ar15.com for a good deal on one.....
