serial numbers
I have noticed in some of the auctions part of the serial numbers are purposely covered or partially so. What is the reason for this? Thanks for the information and education.

I have noticed knowledgable gun sellers in many cases indicate the year a gun was made based on the serial number. Is there an easy way to get this information for the novice. I have several guns that I would like to obtain this info........Thanks in advance

First, welcome to the forum. There are a lot of good people here ready and willing to share a wealth of info.
Second, A lot of people prefer a certain degree of anonymity as to exactly which gun they possess. By x-ing out the last few numbers we should still have a better idea of when it was manufactured for many of the questions while not showing exactly which gun you possess.

Welcome!
Punchie pretty much nailed it, but I will add a small detail.
If you choose to "x" out parts of a s/n don't do it with prefix letters or the first 3 to 4 digits for numbers that have no prefix letters, and if there are suffix letters don't "x" them either.
Now for some humor ... on several occassions I see folks take great pains to "x" out parts of the s/n only to display the full s/n in posted pictures ... might just be my "warped" nature but when I see that it always strikes me as funny.[:D]

Contender Man, I thought I was the only one that laughed about that.[:D] 0
