44 Magnum Recommendations
I recently posted for advice but somehow the post and 11 replies vanished so I would like to ask again.
I have a moderate collection of handguns and want to add a 44 magnum to the fray.
I am considering the S&W 629 Light Hunter from the Performance Center ($880.00), a standard 629 classic 6 1/2 ($670.00) and a Ruger Super Redhawk ($550.00).
To me at first glance the PC model seems expensive but it comes with both Hogue rubber and woodgrips, chamfered chambres, a scope mount plate, an action job and a compensator.
I plan to spend a lot of range time with this gun but it will surely see some hunting[8D].
Or should I just get a 500 magnum? My issue there is the indoor range limitations.
Opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Chuck...
My personal choice is the Ruger Super Redhawk (and it comes with scope rings... all you need is the scope). You can load up a Ruger real hot if you really want to without any danger or failure of the gun... the same can not be said if you do the same with the S&W. One of my favorite loads is a 180 gr. Sierra HP in front of 32.5 grains of WW-296 powder (compressed load)... it chronographs at 2050-2075 fps out of my 9 1/2" Super Redhawk, and groups right at 1" at 50 yards (I have a Leupold M8-2x on it). The only valid complaint that some people have about the Ruger, is the trigger... it is not as good as the S&W out of the box, but with $100 worth of parts and labor, it can be made to be considerably better than the S&W trigger (mine has a 30 oz. SA pull, and right at 4 lbs. DA).

I would 2nd the Ruger but in the Redhawk ( not Super Redhawk) they still make both! the Redhawk comes in both blue and stainless 5 1/2" or 7 1/2" barrels and you can also get the 7 1/2" model that takes the Ruger rings, the 5 1/2" model makes a very nice carry gun for going afield 0 -
I will third this one. Ruger Red Hawk.

Have you considered the blued model 29? i picked mine up for less than 400 0 -
I like my super Red Hawk, but you do have to rework the trigger. I also like my super Black Hawk.

The S&W 629 in 6" is a FANTASTIC shooter (in my opinion).
Dirty Harry liked his.[:D]

I used to have the Super Redhawk stainless, I don't remember the length. It performed flawlessly, it had a scope on it when I bought it, and I should have just removed it - that's part of what I didn't like...
If you're just wanting something for fun, consider a Desert Eagle...0 -
Oh yeah, bambihunter, I forgot the desert eagle. (one AWESOME GUN)
GREAT suggestion unless you are set on a revolver.

I am for the ruger as well just because the 629 bites my hand right in the crotch of my thumb making that the most uncomforatable pistol to shoot, but everyones hands are different. I bought a colt anaconda and have never regreted it. My dad has the ruger it has been a good shooter. 0 -
Dang $880 for a 629 PC LH! What part of the country are you in? There is a fellow down here that sells S&W 629 PC LH for $730.
I have S&W PC LH in both .44 and .45, and they both shoot dead on. I have it set up with a red dot and not a powered scope. The integral scope rail is a nice feature on these S&W PC guns. The Blackhawk is a good gun too as others have said.

I bought a S/W 629 Classic (6 1/2" full lug barrel, stainless steel) a half-dozen years ago, and love it. For target shooting, I use the lighter load .44 Special; something you won't be able to do if you get the Ruger .480. It does bite your hand on the top part of the grip, but that's the price you'll pay with any hand-cannon.
The Colt is a heavier gun, but the grip is shorter and it has a cheap, small diameter extractor. The Ruger is heavy and full-proof, but looks like stove pipe stuck on to the cylinder. the GP 100 (.357) is bar far more attractive.
For hunting, the .44 mag. will knock down just about any huntable game North America has to offer. Took a 6 point buck with my S/W 629 (hand gun hunting is legal in MI) last season. Dropped him in his tracks.0 -
I love my 44's, but for hunting I prefer a Super Blackhawk (Ruger, SA , 7.5 inch). The gun is heavy duty, and a SA is all I want for hunting.
That brings your price down, still gives you an accurate heavy 44 mag for hunting. Use the extra cash for scoping or other toys.
If we do not hang together we will certainly hang separately.0
