Mannlicher 1905
I have a Mannlicher Model 1905. "System Mannlicher Md. 1905 Waffenfabaik Steyr" is located on the left side of the Gun. It is my understanding that they put this on the left hand side so that the Argentine Crest could be put on the right hand side. Is this true for all? I guess my question is, if the model number is on the left hand side, should it have a crest on the right hand side? The one I have does not have the crest, so it either came that way or it was removed and re-blued.
The serial # is 41xx.

The Argentine rifles were 1891 Mausers, and the crest was on the top of the front of the receiver.A Mannlicher is a different action, having a split rear bridge.I have never heard of Mannlichers being issued in Argentina.
Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob0 -

This is a Auto Hand Gun not rifle. Sorry, left that part out. [:I]0 -
dwr111, I am glad you pointed out that we are talking about a pistol. I was about to post info about the Mannlicher-Schoenauer model 1905 rifle.
Mannlicher pistol came in a Commercial Model 1905 and an Argentine model 1905. The Blue Book says Argentine crest on military model is usually milled off. The military model with crest intact is worth much more.0 -
Owned one years ago, it to had the crest removed [V].
Supposedly Argentina was the primary user of the Model 1905 Mannlicher/Steyr pistols. The purchased 6,000 of the total production of 10,000.
The 1905 Mannlicher/Steyr pistols were not the only Agrentine firearms that had the crests removed. The Model 1891 Mauser Rifles that were first imported in the 50's, also were ground. It wasn't until later when the Model 1909 Mauser rifles started to be imported, that Argentines wised up and stoped grinding the crests off.

So, would it be safe to assume that mine has had the crest removed and then re-blued?0 -

It would be probably be safe to say so. Obviously with out a hands-on there's no way to give you a definitive answer. When I was actively collecting, almost all of the few 1905's I ran across were ex Argentine pistols. 1905's aren't common whether Argentine or not.

Ok, that is what I thought, just wanted to make sure. From what I have read, if the manufacture info and model number is on the left hand side, which would indicate it was an Argentine pistol. Just wanted to make sure before I sell it.
Thanks again for your help.
