subsonic .308win
I posted earlier, "I have an automatic .308win is it possible to load subsonic rounds that cycle the action? if so what bullet and powder do I use? "
In my county there is a $40 bounty on Coyotes and an abundance of road kill. People here put the road kill in a field and then when it's dark come back to find coyotes. It's my theory that if someone had a silenced gun it would be possible to stay back about 200 yards and shoot a few before the others knew what was going on. I do realize that a bullet that only comes out of the muzzle at 1050fps will drop significantly at 200 yards.
But anyway, that was my reason for asking about subsonic loads.
I want to suppress my gun.
I have suppressed a 22 and found that ground squirrel aren't scared down after the first shot. So if I successful at suppressing my .308 I am sure that I will do some squirrel hunting with it too.
My new question is, will a 24" 1-10 twist barrel stabilize a subsonic 220gr bullet? Does the speed affect bullet stability?
Thank you

Number 1 you are never going to be able to 'silence' a 308. You will be able to drastically change the sound signature, and you will be able to 'hide' the source of the bullet. You will still have a sonic boom. I think a 308 would be very unstable at such low speeds. I would talk to the person who is going to build your can for you, they would be able to set up a gun for you. Make sure it is legal to hunt with a suppressor in your state, not all states allow it. 0 -
here are ans some sites that contain info on subsonic 308. they may be usefull to anyone who wants to know more about it.

there are plenty more sites out there that sell subsonic 308 cartridges but I don't know what the pressure has to be to cycle the action. and the cheap rounds cost over a dollar a shot. what I would like to know;
is there a powder that can create just the right amount of pressure to cycle my action without damaging it and keeping the muzzle velocity under the sound barrier.
I would think that the case would have to be barley full of a really fast burning powder to create enough pressure but not velocity.
I know if I put some new springs on my gun I could get the action to work but it would be ideal to not have to change the springs out every time I switched back and fourth from regular to subsonic loads.
I am sure there are some people out there more knowledgeable this than I am. and I would like to hear for you
thank you

I can't answer your question directly (since I'm always trying to make them go faster), but I can offer a few other ideas:
Why not use a large caliber slow rifle instead? They larger bullet diameter would have more of an effect and some of them wouldn't even have to be slowed down (or much) to make it subsonic.
If you are planning on seeing and shooting 'yotes at night at 200 yards then you are likely to spend more on the night scope alone than you'll ever recoup from the bounty.
You should be able to suppliment your road kill "bait" with some calls such as rabbit distress call.0 -
I have given buying a 45 acp rifle some thought. but I have a 308 and was wondering what i could do with it. plus i believe with a 45 acp i would sacrifice accuracy or at least on the guns in my price range. and so far for me like fishing the natural bait works better then man-made. but i do used calls on occasion.
Talking to the guy that is making my "can" won't do me a lot of good in this case, because I"m that guy.
but thanks for the tips

If you get to fooling with sub-sonic loads in your semi-auto your going to most likley have problems with it and have to start fiddling with the operating system to get it to cycle properly. Since you don't mention what type of rifle no advice can be given about gas port adjustment (if any), etc.
Next if your using 220 gr bullets I don't believe you'll get them to stabalize at the velocities your talking about.
Lastly why in the heck use 220 gr bullets on Coyotes? And, 45 acp carbine that's not a good way to go, but you could probably work up something with a 9mm that would serve you well to 100+ yards, and there are some very good 9mm loads that would drop a song dog like a bad habit. Of course there is 22 mag and even 17 HMR that can get the job done too.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Arso, you also have to be careful that you will not turn your rifle into an 'evil assault rifle'. If your rifle is a post-ban AR-10 or FN/FAL style rifle you will have problems. Are you making the can on a Form 1? 0 -
The reason that I am using a 220gr bullet on coyotes is to make the bullet subsonic more gr more muzzle pressure to cycle the action.
And I am registering the my cans and paying for the paperwork so they know I have them so I don't plan on using it as an "evil assault rifle" and even if I didn't register it I am not an evil person and don't plan on doing anything evil any time soon.
