I'm being told by a seller that fireams that are shipped by UPS OR FED EX ,must be shipped next day air or over night express . And so he wants $43 to ship a mod 10 from Indiana to Washington . Is this guy trying to rip me off or what. He is a first time seller with no feedback . also he didn't give a shipping cost in the auction . I have told him I won't pay more than $25 , which I think is fair .I think He can ship it us mail priority for $3.50 .

Fore a hand gun you may not us USPS. The hand gun must be shipped over night. How much insurance, special handeling cost and shipping is arbitrary. You can do a reverse check with UPS or Fed Ex and see what the real cost is for over night.

If the seller is an FFL he can ship the handgun USPS with form 1508. If not FFL he must either get FFL to ship or use UPS or FEDEX. My .02

UPS originally came up with the rule that all handguns must be shipped Next Day Air services in order to protect themselves from the thieves that they have hired. Next Day Air packages are kept in a locked area, & do not sit around in an open warehouse over weekends. FEDEX realized that this was a great way to make additional profit too, so they joined in.

Since the seller is apparently not an FFL, he would have to pay the Priority Mail & insurance charges, plus the dealers fee if he were to ship through a dealer. (The dealer has to log the transaction in/out of his bound book, then wrap the package & arrange for pickup.) The total would probably exceed the common carrier Next Day Air charge.

An experienced seller would have indicated the shipping method in his description. However, since he didn't, & you bid without asking, you are obligated to pay the full amount of the charge. Both UPS & FEDEX have estimators on their websites.

You can indeed ship U.S.P.O. - hand guns and others. I will only ship Prioriy Mail ( two to three day delivery) with The U.S.P.O. The above gentleman is right about the form needed to ship a handgun. I have been told by other dealers that the U.S. post office in there area will not allow them to ship a handgun. I can in my area. Shipping all depends upon where the item is going and weight also if your item is over a certain lenght this could indeed increase the cost of shipping. I also order custom shipping boxes to ship my long guns in that increase my cost. But all in all 25.00 covers my shipping cost with delivery confirmation shipping Priority mail. - Susan

Even if he did send it USPS (assuming he is a dealer going to another dealer), once the model 10 is packaged, it is going to weigh way more than the 16 oz or less to qualify for the $3.50 priority mail charge. Throw in insurance ( I assume its worth more than $10 to you), confirmation charges, etc., USPS price is going to be closer to the $13-$15 charge.

But all this is assuming that it is going dealer to dealer.....

Handguns cannot be mailed (US Postal Service) to or from a nonlicensee.

Refer to USPS Pub 52, section 432.1:

"Mailer must be licensed manufacturer or dealer mailing to another licensed manufacturer or dealer."

Shipping from non ffl or ffl to ffl thru ups does cost that much. I just shipped a hangun two states away from me using ups and it cost 39.79. You pay overnight super saver with the adult sig confirm insured and it sure does run up fast. He is not lying to you. You can calculate the costs yourself if you have his zip code from the ups site if you do not believe him. I agree it is a big ripoff but if you do not have an ffl you have no choice when shipping.

After reading the "shipping rules" published on the gunbroker website, which I had never bother to before , I realize my seller is not trying to rip me off , It's FED EX . I haven't bought a gun before from from a person that didn't have an FFL , so hadn't ran into the problem . I will honer the transaction and chalk it up as a
lesson learned the hardway . Thanks for the replies

I visited my folks 2 weeks ago in another state and mailed 4 of my dads handguns back to an FFL in my state, via overnight mail from the post office. Or you can use UPS, but you can only mail them from a UPS Client service location, not to be confused with just any UPS location. FFL's usually charge about 20 bucks for the first gun, and 10 for every gun after that. You can ONLY mail your handgun to an FFL....unless your mailing it to an authorized repair center for repaires. Gun parts do not require an FFL, UNLESS your mailing a frame.

Boltthrower, I am sure that you were well-intentioned, but the fact is, what you did was a violation of federal law. Had your package been X-rayed, or opened by the Postal Inspectors for any reason, you would have been facing several years in a federal prison. At the least, you would have had a legal bill of > $10,000.

PLEASE read the regulations & follow them. You can't possibly save enough money to justify the possible consequences of violating them.
