will a magazine marked 284 work in a .308 rifle? As always thanks for your replies.

No. The 243/308 will work. 284 and 358 are separate. [:)]

There are newly made magazines on the market, and you can get the correct one for your rifle from Brownells, Stock #895-100-100, $52.15, 1-800-741-0015. You might get a cheaper one from The Numrich Gun Parts Corp., 866-686-7424.
