I have an old 6 1/2 inch model 29 that I'll never part with. That is a great gun

I have both and prefer the S@W.

I have 3 629's and 1 Redhawk. The 629's are 3", 4" and 6" and the Redhawk a 7 1/2". For carry, smoothness of action, and general use, I go w/ S&W. For hunting with the heavy 300gr bullets I use, I use the Redhawk for the strength of it.

I used to have a Super Red Hawk and a Desert Eagle. I've since sold both of them and now hunt game that same size with my 10mm auto. So far I haven't had any trouble with it cleanly taking deer sized animals.
I'm not saying it's for you, but with the weight of my .44 mag handguns they just got left behind too often.

Although I'm a huge fan of Ruger handguns and the Redhawk was my first .44 I wouldn't buy another unless it was a steal, just a huge gun. If I intended to hunt with a handgun I'd go with a Super Blackhawk. I find them very accurate and less bulky than double actions. I've shot a friend's 629 Classic and I'd choose it over a Redhawk unless I intended to shoot alot of heavy loads.

I have to reccomend the Super Redhawk. I've got the 6" barrel and it is a very accurate revolver. I've never had any trouble with it. It is heavy, but it tames the recoil well. Dollar for dollar, I think it is the best .44 for hunting available. I reload 240 grain Hornady XTP hollow points for it.

I am a S&W collector and I still won't recommend the Performance Center packages .... just to darn much money when there are so many other, very good, Smiths on the secondary market.

Secondly the Rugers are good revolvers, but they are big and bulky, and as suggested above ... if your going toward the Ruger consider the Super Blackhawk as it is lighter and most folks, especially hunting, fire their revolver single action. But if you go the Ruger route, get the 7 1/2 barrel.

Personally I use a Model 29 w/ an 8 3/8 inch barrel, setup with a Leupold 2x which I change to a Leupold 4x if I'll be in more open country.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

I bought a S/W 629 Classic; 6 1/2", full lug, stainless steel about 6 years ago. With it's recoil I must admit that I do most of my target shooting with the lighter load .44 special. But for handgun hunting (legal in Michigan), it' served me well. Took a 6 point last season. Dropped him in his tracks.

Pick up a Super Black Hawk. They are very accurate and the recoil is extremely manageable.
