Question on Savage model 72
Hi, a customer brought in a Savage 72 with the complaint that when he cocks the hammer and then opens the action, the hammer drops when the lever is almost to the end of its stroke. He believes this to be a safety issue. I tried contacting Savage. They referred me to their historian, because they no longer make this model. Although I am not familiar with this gun, it looks to me as though there is no reason to cock the hammer before opening and if you do there still isn't a safety problem. I should say that this model has the inertia firing pin and transfer bar safety system. If anyone can help with this, especially if you have an owners manual describing correct operation, I will be very grateful. TIA

I might be wrong on this? BUT it seems to me that Savage just changed the name, and there still selling the rifle your inquiring about as the Stevens Favorite Model 30GM.
I'm sure if it's still in production, they'll be more than happy to send you an owners manual.

I sold many when they first came out,and in fact kept one for my Daughter. That is the way it is designed to work. If you notice,it drops on the transfer bar long before the firing pin is in position.
Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob0 -
Thanks for the replies. I believed the gun was working correctly, but wanted to doublecheck the operation with some experts. I also found out that Savage has their manuals online which can be printed out. Thanks again.
