Ruger or Springfield?

I would stay away from ruger's centerfire handgun line. They make excellent rimfire .22s. I would definitly go with the one springfield models mainly because the quality is better. Also, if you end up get one of the springfield XD models, I believe they have an ambidextrious mag release. The Ideal gun for the southpaws would be a Hk USP. Mag release is on both sides and you can convert the slide release and safety for lefties without much effort. In fact that is one of their main selling points. If you have the money you may want to check that out or just get one of the springfields.

I just purchased the XD sub compact 9mm 2 weeks ago. Great little handgun. I've already put 100 rounds through it and had no problems at all.

I dont know what the last guys problem with Rugers centerfires is but I would definitely give Rugers a look, both the P90 and P97 are great guns. Rugers quality is excellent and the price is cheap compared to others. Rugers will go bang everytime, and are way overbuilt. I dont own a Taurus or Springfield, or an HK for that matter.

The Rugers all have ambi-levers, but the P97 only has the mag eject on the left side of the gun (good for righties, bad for lefties). The slide release cannot convert on Rugers, so that is a plus for the HK.

Since you want ambi mag and safety, I would recommend the P90.

Buy whatever fits you the best and you feel most comfortable with, I just didnt want you to write off Rugers because of one persons disgust with them.

HK, you never said why to stay away from Rugers - care to explain?

I'd have to second the above statement regarding Rugers. Generally speaking, I've noticed them to be hit and miss as far as reliability. Fit and finish isn't that great either, resulting in mediocre accuracy. Triggers are pretty bad.

As far as Springfields, I'm not sure which "series" you're referring to. I don't know much about the XDs. As far as the 1911s go, I'd highly recommend them, especially the "Loaded" series. I believe there are "Loaded" models that have ambidextrous thumb safeties and the fit and finish is pretty good (almost as good as Kimbers). Even the stock ones aren't too bad for the money. If you get one of basic "Mil-Spec" ones, you'll need to add an ambidextrous safety...these will run you about $20-60 depending on how fancy you want get; they're pretty easy to install.
As far as a mag release goes on a 1911, you don't need an ambidextrous mag release! Just do what I (and probably 99% of the left-handed, 1911-shooting world) do: use your left trigger finger to push the mag release. This is WAY faster than what the right handed people have to do (shifting grip and reaching with their right thumb), plus it's safer, because if your trigger finger is on the mag release, it's off and away from the trigger.[;)]

i HAD a ruger p90. i got so pissed off with it i traded it off on a rem.700 .280!!! with it on a sandbag rest. at 25yrd's it would spray the bullets all over a paperplate. it was like everytime a new round was chambered the bbl. would reset in a new spot in the housing. changing the point of aim. i ran about 10 baxes through it in about 2yrs. than gave up, sent it down the road. now i have a ruger blackhawk in 45lc. i love that gun!!! shots right on the $$$$$$[:D]

Rugers are definitely not the prettiest or the best trigger. But I have never had a problem with the accuracy or function of a Ruger. Springfield are not bad, but why not get some made in the USA like the Ruger or perhaps a Kimber if all else fails.

I use to own a P-97 and got rid of it because it wasnt ejecting some of the rounds. It only ever did it with FMJ rounds which I found pretty strange. It did it once with 230 grain Sellier & Belliot FMJ and alot with Remington-UMC 230 grain FMJ.It always fed and ejected hollow points though but I couldnt afford to practice with $20.00 a box hollow's and was very frustrated having to stop all the time to manually pull rounds out,so I just got rid of it.I know it wasnt from limp wristing,I feel it had to do with some damage to the ejector because you have to take and flip it down to field strip which I didnt like that little feature either. It was a great shot though. It always sent 1 flyer per mag full but all the rest were on the money, even the flyers grouped together.

Ok rugergunz...first of all, in this hobby/sport, you get what you pay for. You also should stick with the specialty of the manufacture. Rugers only just started making center fire hand guns in the last 10 years only to make more money. You could never convince me that a gun as ugly as a ruger p90/94 was worth paying for. Any Hk,glock, springfield, kimber,or sig equivalent to the ruger would out perform it and any field test. Sorry you chose rugers to like and collect cause you are only hurting yourself.[V]

before you totally write off the rugers, keep in mind that they have consistently ranked very, very well in the accuracy and reliability department by several national magazines. about a year ago, Shotgun News claimed that the ruger .45 was one of THE best service .45s on the market. keep in mind that you cannot beat the value. additionally ruger's customer service is traditionally very good and fast.

the XD series by springfield is also widely respected, and a fun gun to shoot... too bad the calibers (.357sig, 9mm, .40) are dinky. (I say this only as a true believer in the awesome .45, argue all you want... you won't change my mind... [:D])

anyhow, shoot em both, yeah, the rugers are pretty ugly, but ugly works...

HK, does that mean that I should only associate H&K with military weaponry. That is/was their specialty?
