Kalifornia Gun dealers
How long is a dealer supposed to keep the DROS paper work? John
I might not always tell you the truth, but I will never lie to you!

Literally forever. When the ffl goes out of business, he turns over his records and 4473's to the BATF and DOJ. Then THEY keep the records in perpetuity. That is for what is called a "forward trace". In the event either agency finds a suspicious gun, they start with the makers shipping records to the original dealer. They check his sales records. If that buyer doesn't have the gun anymore it was supposed to have been transferred with a "private party DROS" which records the next transfer.
That's why we need to go to a dealer to sell our private guns in Cali. FYI DOJ handgun records go back to the 1930's and long gun records are thrown out after three days. I got this directly from the supervisor of the DROS division at DOJ!
....I never met a gun I didn't like!0
