7mm 08 Questions/Need answers
I am new to gunning, but have been reading up alot on the 7mm 08 caliber rifle. I am looking to purchase a rifle for my wife and from what I read this is a pretty sweet rifle.
What I am trying to find out is this: what exactly is a 7mm 08 [?]
I have heard of 7mm mags, but this is a new one. (to me) Does it kick much compared say to a 270 caliber?
Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

The 7mm-08 is the 308 Winchester necked down to 7mm(.284)caliber. They are a good all around using caliber and one of the best choices for smaller statured shooters/hunters. They have been proven to be exceptionally accurate on average compared to most calibers and have been very popular with metalic silhouette shooters after it was discovered that they were not only accurate but retained good enough power to topple the long distance plate targets without excessive recoil. They are used frequently for game up to black bear and sometimes used for larger stuff by some people.-- I would roughly estimate the recoil to be about 3/4s that of a 308 in similar weight rifles, and less than a 270 with typically used bullet weights. They are not as fast and flat as magnum type calibers but shoot flat enough and hit hard enough for most any deer type hunting,etc.-- One thing to be aware of is that they are availible in very small light weight rifles that are easy to carry and handle, but in guns this light the felt recoil starts to go back up quickly.-- I'd go with a normal weight rifle in this caliber for someone who will be recoil sensitive.-- They are a good caliber that will get the job done if the shooter does their part and isn't concerned with trying to impress everyone with talking about how their gun is the fastest, etc. the way alot of people do. I started my daughter and niece out on a 243 winchester for about a year and then moved them to 7mm-08s with good success. The 6mm Remington or the 243 Win. recoil less and shoot lighter bullets faster, but the 7mm-08 gives you a good choice of heavier bullet weights for larger game down the road.-- Other good choices for starters are 257 Roberts and the new 260 Remington which is the same case as the 308 Win. and the 7mm-08 just necked down to 6.5mm(.264) caliber. -- I'd have to say that all in all the 7mm-08 is the best all around hunting round of those I've mentioned if you want to go with one rifle and keep it though...........Good luck......[8D] 0 -

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
i love the 7mm-o8! it has done very well for me on whitetail deer out to about 300yrds. i really like it in the rem. 700. but what was said about lighter rifles is true. i shot the same 140gr. factory ammo in a browning leveraction. and it had alot more felt recoil than my rem. i know a pound and a half sounds so small. but it made a big differance on my shoulder!!!!!!!!!!

The Sweed is it's own cartridge. While it's somewhat based on the 7mm & 8mm Mauser (as are most of todays non-magnum cartridges), it has other changes than just the neck diameter.
It's almost identical balisticly to the 260Rem.
Most of the pre-vietnam "main battle" cartridges are roughly equivalant to others of there day, as most of the army's had similar requirments.

Most of the replys are true. If the gun is for your wife, get a model 7. It is light weight and small enough that handling it will not be a problem. If recoil is a concern, buy a Remington R-3 recoil pad for her. The pads are made by Sims Vibration Laboratories and work extremely well. My 11 year old is recoil sensitive but after installing a sims pad on my 300wsm, he had no problem shooting it. They are well worth the money. Around $30. The 7mm-08 is probably the best short action all around cartridge out there. I have hunted with one for the last 7 years. The last 4 in its ackley improved form. The AI requires a gunsmith to ream the chamber which in turn creates a 40* shoulder angle. This version is for reloaders. I have taken deer at almost 400yds with one shot and none have as much as flinched. The model 7 should perform well with federal 140grn ballistic tips. Plenty of range with very little recoil.
Everyone has a photographic memory. Only some have film.0 -
Pick the rifle that fits both in length and heft for the shooter. The cartridge should also be in keeping for the shooter. If the shooter is less robust and possibly recoil shy then any of the classic and modern rounds in cases smaller then the 06 will do as well as any. The difference between .308", 7mm, 6.5mm, .257" & 6mm is minamal as is the case difference of 57mm and 51mm. If the shooter does their part the bullet will also, as long as they both are fit for the game. 0
