I have an H&R model 999, that is engraved, in a wooden presenation box, 1 of 999 on the gun. Also has a medallion in box that reads Awarded by United States Centennial Commission. International exhibition. Any idea on value of this set up. Has not been fired and is new in box with all papers. Thanks[8D] 0 -
There is a H&R website that may be helpful. http://hr1871.com/
I have a 999 and consider it as good as the best .22 pistols. I have several including a K22 I bought new in 1949, still like new.0 -
Hi;
The H&R Model 999 is indeed an excellent pistol. The only .22 pistol I have in my safe. Mine is SN L61XX, and I conatced NEF several years back and they said they could provide no info on the original Model 999s produced by H&R...they just purchased the name, patents, etc. They did come out with their own version in the early 90's I recall. I ave never ran across a production schedule so I can't help you estimate the age of yours. The only thing I ever recall seeing in print was Model 999s made in the '30s had cuts on each side of the forcing cone (the part of the barrel just in front of the cylinder)...that feature was discontinued in the early '40s due to manufacturing costs. I think the new 999s have it.
Good luck on your search and have fun with your shooting. If you run across some production info, please share with us.

rin1775,
your model 999 was manufactured after new england firearms took over. the letter codes HK were used in 1995. n.e.f operated between 1987 and 1999
fourdees,
your model 999 was manufactured in 1951 and is of the pre world war II design. in 1953 a new frame with two piece grips was introduced.
the model 999 sportsman was introduced in october 1932 and was in continous production until 1986 when the original h&r company closed their door. the model 999 was in limited production for the civilan market during world war II.
when new england firearms started production late 1987 the model 999 was probably the first revolver they produced. n.e.f. produced the model 999 until 1999 when marlin purchased the company and all handguns were discontinued. the exception to that is i believe the starter revolvers are still in production.
the web site hr1871 used to have a h&r talk forum where a lot of good useful information was being posted but because of the abuse of this site by some member (posting information against h&r policies) it was shut down and a great site was lost.

b.goforth;
Sir, thank you kindly for that information! Wow, from the shape of my 999, I would have never guessed 1951...it looks like new...a little wear at the muzzle and some scratches, but... I love to shoot it and loading/reloading is a breeze with the speedloaders.
Again, thank you!

Thanks for the help! I've wanted a 999 for over forty years and now I own one that is un-fired in the box with all the papers. So I still "need" a 999 to shoot![8D] 0 -
I just dug mine out of the safe, sn D21xxx. Can you tell me the d.o.m.?
Thanks much0 -
orca44mag,
the d letter codes are a little more difficult to date because h&r use the letter code 'd' for double action and 's' for single action on the very early model 999 production (1932-1937). in 1940 h&r started using the letter code system that they would use to the end and then n.e.f used the same system.
in 1940 the letter code 'a' was added to all firearms serial numbers H&R manufactured that year. in 1941 it was 'b'and on up. that would put the letter code 'd' in 1940 but all the model 999 i have studied with the letter code 'd' have been of the early production.
can you tell me if your model 999 has a frame mounted firing pin or hammer mounted firing pin. for now i believe it is safe to say your 999 was manufactured between 1933 and 1936.

b.goforth,
It has a frame mounted firing pin.
I'm assumimg that earlier models do not bring much of an incearse in value?0 -
orca 44 magnum,
the frame mounted firing pin are the early models and they do bring extra but only to a collector. these early model 999 are more of a target gun than the post war models. they have special hardened and polished internal parts with a factory set light trigger pull on single action.
thanks for the information on your model 999, according to the serial number list i am developing your revolver was manufactured in 1934
