Browning Citori XT-trap gun for my son
I've been considering the purchase of a Citori XT Trap gun w/adj comb for my son. He's currently shooting the Lightning sporting clays gun w/hi rib and has had some probs with the fit. Could I get an opinion from some trap shooters who might have some experience with this gun???

sorry for the delayed response.... When shooting he has noted a couple of probs, 1. sore cheek after an evening on the range, 2. must cover bird entirely in order to get it to break. A local shooter has taped a shim to the comb on the stock to adj the gun fit and he has improved. But we're looking to try and move from consistant 18-20 into the 23-25 range. Thanks for your help...its much appreciated. 0 -
Gun fit is important when shooting trap. Going to an adjustable comb can raise the POI. Length of pull (LOP) may be another reason your son is experiencing cheek pain. I recently saw some products by Beartooth that may help. They are neoprene sleeves with foam inserts that can be used to vary comb height and stock length. I think Bass Pro and Cabelas have them. Depending on your son's age this may be cheaper than going the new gun route. 0 -
first, switch to one ounce loads and install a merc recoil reducer into the stock. sounds like your gun is shooting low. try patterning your gun to see if its a bore problem or a comb problem. most adjustable combs can correct a shot if the bores are within tolerence. if the bores are off, you can end up adjusting the comb to its limits and still be off. follow me? before doing the adjustable comb mod, try a morgan adjustable pad. its a lot cheaper than a new stock or a new gun. i have one if you need one. give me a call and we will work it out. next, measure the distance when your son has his gun mounted. how far is his grip thumb from his face? 2" or 2 finger widths is perfect. anything longer means the gun is too long. if his grip is touching his face, its too short. though those slip on stick on foamy pads a real nice, they tend to push your face away from centerline which can mess up your line up on the beads, forcing you to strain to get your face and eye on center. let me know what your next move is and we will continue. its all a trial and error kind of fix. it takes time.

The XT is a great trap gun and I have one. Even with the porting on the barrels a recoil reducer is a excellent addition. An internal reducer keeps the great wood look that the XT came with. Either the mercury reducers or the Edwards Recoil reducer (no poisonous heavy metals in the Edwards) will reduce the felt recoil.
I personally don't subscribe to the 2" thumb to cheek rule. There are way to many variables (location of stock on shoulder, how much you turn your head to put cheek to stock and others.
Other things to look at are the trigger pull. I had to reduce the trigger pull on the XT down to 3 to 4 pounds. It came from the factory at almost 5 pounds.
The adjustable cheek piece will allow you find the correct sight picture for when your sons brain tells him to pull the trigger (read shoot higher).
My XT allowed me to get to a consistant 100 to 150 targets. After that I went to a Perazzi to get to the next level.

i stand by the 2" rule. he may be hitting himself in the face with his thumb and it may not be the gun. we need to hear back from the poster on that one. the gun is obviously shooting line of sight becasue with the tape on top, it helped him. the cheapo pads and stickys are a quick fix. im more concerned with why a browning is shooting line of sight. btw..poster, is your gun fixed chokes or screw ins? it could be a bad set of screw ins. even a browning clay gun should shoot 60/40 on a flat sighted rib. figure 8 should give some rise on a bird. help me out, is the clay gun a straight stock? maybe a plain ole m/c stock will do it and forgo all the adjustables?
