300 Ultra vs. 300 Win-- whats the diff.
What is the difference between 300 Ultra Mag and the 300 Win Mag.Thank you for your help.

the 300RUM is based on the 404 jeffries case and has no belt,..the 300win is one of the derivations of the original 300 H&H which had the belt to maintain headspace with it's sharp body taper. The RUM will typically hold ~15-20grs more powder with simialr bullet weights. This equates to some serious speed increases,...oh yeah and some moderate recoil increase as well. To be honest,..of the 300win and 300rum senderos I have shot,..I don't see the increase in recoil of the rum to be indicative of it's power increase. The RUM family is inherently accurate of all the versions I have worked with.
I would take my RUM over a 300win due to the similar recoils but higher velocity when the shots get long,..but those who consider anything much over 300yds as unethical (me not being one of them) then the 300win is more than you need. For 300yds and the like,..the 308 and 30-06 are plenty enough power for even the largest whitetail. I don't bother to dirty the barrel on my RUM unless the shot is at least 300yds,...hence my reasoning for choosing the caliber as well as being able to push 200-240gr pills through the winds at the benchrest matches. The varmint caliber guys who are great shooters can best me in the calm,..but when the wind picks up,..I don't have to pay as much attention to the conditions as they do.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
