A.O.W. question (Illinois)
At our last gun show i noticed a dealer selling "pen-guns." I always thought they were illegal in Illinois so i looked it up and to my suprise i found A.O.W.'s like this are legal in IL, but not full-auto/SBS's/SBR's.....
My question is this: Although Short Barreled Shotguns are illegal, the ones that come from the factory with a pistol grip, not shoulder stock, and then have the barrel shortened are considered A.O.W.'s, not SBS's, at least thats how i understand it. Does this mean i can buy one of the ultra-short pistol grip Mossberg 12 gauges ive been seeing legally, and it will only cost $5 to register?? I tried to look it up but had no luck getting any detail. Thanks to anyone who can help clarify this for me....

Just had to give this one a bump, cause I'm curious to see what the answer is...
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.0 -
I see more than a few people shooting the 'mossberg pistols' at a local range that LEOs frequent and the owner is strict on legal only weapons on the range. I guess those are OK in LA.
I must not know enough about what you are talking about. Will a 'pen gun' fit in your pocket ?0 -
I'm guessing that the one you saw is one of the newer variety of pen guns that must be bent in half and locked in place in order to fire. These kind need no class III stamp whatsoever as once they are in the firing position they resemble a firearm closely enough.
The old Stinger or OSS pen guns do not bend/crack in half to fire as the are fired from the pen looking like a tube as is. These are classified as AOWs because they do not resemble a firearm while in firing position.
I remember a couple of years ago that the bend in half kind(non-class III) were all over the gun shows for about $200-250. I even see them pop up on auction from time to time.0 -
Thanks everyone!
So how hard is it to aquire a gun of this type that is already built? Serbu firearms has one as do several other companies, is it difficult to get the paperwork/approval?0 -
