I've never brought any back with me. Always shipped. Paid a deposit and sent the import paperwork to the seller (see below). Got some from Canada without any paperwork as they were antiques and no subject to anything.

Obtain an FORM 6 APPLICATION from your local A.T.F. office.

2.Complete the FORM 6 APPLICATION and submit it to your local Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms for approval. There is no fee for this.?

3.Once you receive approval documents issued by the A.T.F., keep the originals and send the seller copies of all paperwork.

The other response is correct but I believe he is only speaking of Canada. Mexico is a whole other world. In most instances without the appropriate permits it's not legal for Mexican citizens to have firearms, permits are issued by local Policia, so sale of a firearm from a citizen to you would be uncommon at best, be ready to do some research on what is the letter of the law regarding purchase, permits and transfers to the U.S. and then be ready to understand how to do business in Mexico, $20 here and $20 there is a real common way to get the right paperwork filled out to make it all legal. Typically if this is not done your paperwork is "stalled out" somewhere in the Mexican bureacracy. Good luck and have fun with it.

Snellstrom is correct...but don't go with $20...start at $10 and play it from there. USED to be you could contact a Mexican consulate to take your firearms INTO Mexico but it took a while for the consulate to get paperwork processed, and no "mordida" was needed. At that time you could also take up to a 1/2 case of shotgun shells with you. We used to go to Ciudad Victoria on a combined fishing trip and whitewing dove hunt, and never had a real problem. Times have changed!!! Dramatically!!!

You do NOT want to be caught with a firearm that is not registered with the local policia, nor do you want to be caught with one (1) round of any type of ammunition. The Federales and local police go semi-nuts if they find it. Best to find a local MEXICAN attorney, make friends with him, and have him walk the papers through the necessary "officials", replete with monies for "mordida" (read that as bribes, or more politically correct term would be "incentives") to ensure that all goes smoothly and you are NOT stopped on the Mexican side of the border and arrested and incarcerated in what are some of the worst jails in the world.

All this is probably going to cost you much more than what you are paying for the firearm, so you have to weigh in those costs, and add them to the price of the firearm.

That's my experience and opinion on the matter...

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not shooting at me!

You can buy 22 cal pistols and riles at the local supermarket in a lot of the Mexican bigger cities. The shoot a pellet or ball thats put in the barrell first and then you enter a 22 cal cartridge (blank) The one I have is a derringer made by MENDOZA Model K-62-3 in Calibre 4.5/177. Neat little gun and unusual. Bought it before 911, along with several boxes of ammunition. Don't think you could get one through customs today. I dont know if it is collectible or not.
