5.56 semi auto rifle
I am thinking about getting a 5.56 semi aout rifle. OK .223 is OK also. I will be using it for plinking mostly. I would like it to be accurate to 300 yards with optics if necessary. I would like to spend less than $900.00. What are your thoughts?

Ruger Mini 14, AR-15 or clone would be the way I'd go. Ruger be my first choice and the AR second. Both have a lot of toys you can add later.

Get an AR15. There's lots more accessories and parts available for AR's than Rugers. Plus, you can buy better magazines, even USGI mags, for the AR.

I would buy either a Armalite AR-180B (retail $650) or an Armalite AR-M152 which retails for about a grand. 0 -
Depends on what you call accurate at 300 yds.The mini-14 is typically not as accurate as the other type gun, unless your happy with combat type accuracy. Just depends on your needs.......[8D] 0 -
Get a Bushmaster[:D]

The AR is versatile. With the AR you can swap uppers in seconds to convert to pistol calibers, heavy barrel tack drivers, military configurations, survival carbines or a featherweight plinker. With all the accessories available,it's a hobby unto itself. 0 -
you ought to look at a DPMS Lo-Pro classic as well. They're just under $900, and should be plenty accurate up to 3-400yrds easy with a scope 0 -
I have a Ruger Ranch rifle with a 0-4X Pentax Lightseeker scope on it that I like awfully well for a truck gun and coyote hunting. I have little experience with other semi-autos except low-end stuff like Saigas and SKS's. I honestly don't think a Ruger can deliver coyote accuracy at 300 yards. The trigger is creepy and takes some familiarization. Still, it is a dependable rifle, mine has never failed to cycle many brands of reloads and cheaper ammo, is accurate enough for most hunting situations out to 200 yards and is not unreasonably priced. 0 -
I am looking at a pre ban Daewoo with folding stock. Pros and Cons?

The Daewoo is a real interesting rifle, the best parts of the AK-47 meeting up with the M16. It is/was the national arm of S. Korea but is not a sniper rifle in the short barrel folding stock style. If the price is right it would be a fun rifle to own, but you will not find many things made to work with it. The hands down winner for flexablity is the AR15. If I wanted an off the shelf rifle with target accuracy out to 300yds in .223 I would go with the Bushmaster Varmint style with a 24" barrel and match grade trigger. You can always add shorter top ends as wanted later, but you will style have a target trigger in it. When you go the other route you end up having to get a match trigger installed and that is problematical as to how good the results will be. 0
