Rust flecks

That depends on what you mean by rust flakes? If it is very light rust you can get some BRONZE wool NOT STEEL WOOL! and some good gun oil. Lightly rub off the rust. But when the rust comes off you will have to see if it went all the way down in the metal leaving pit marks. If it does keep a good coat of oil on it,but get it reblued as soon as you can. If you have any question feel free to call me at 423-639-8924 or the web at www.ccr-refinishing.com

Thank you. I'll try the bronze wool if I can find it. Judging from the overall condition of the rifle, I wouldn't think the rust is that deep but I'll have to check to see. I don't want to hurt the value of an already expensive rifle. I was afraid of steel wool and did not know that bronze wool even existed. Appreciate the advice.

If you can find it, titanium wool is the best thing I have found to remove rust without removing bluing. I have found it at gunshows, but I don't know where to order it.

    Randy,
It might sound crazy, but for small areas and/or light surface rust,I use a penny and a little oil.The penny's softer than the metal so it won't scratch it but does a good job of knocking off the rust.
And the best part is the cost.[:D]

There is a company called IOSSO tht sells a product called Gun Brite Polish that is made to clean gun blueing and remove light rust from blued metal. I have used it for several years now and had nothing but good results from it. I believe that Brownell's and maybe Cabela's have it but not certain about Cabela's. Or you can call IOSSI at 708-437-8400 direct.

Use a #2 pencil to remove the rust. The graphite will get the rust off and help prevent if from getting worse. Rust is like cancer, the earlier you find it and get rid of it, the better.

At the least try a solvent with tooth brush. Just let the solvent sit on the rust for a while so it can set in and the SCRUB SCRUB A DUB!![:D]
