New .17 HMR ammo
Are there any details available on new loads for the .17 hmr? Thought I had read something on here awhile back about some new options from CCI and Hornady that were supposed to come out in Feb, but I haven't seen anything on the market yet.

don't know where you are shopping but they are out there and if I recall correctly it is CCI and Remington. One is basically a copy of the original Hornady with a different colored tip. The other is a different design HP. If I remember an article I read a few weeks ago the performance is all pretty much the same including velocity that may run around 100 fps faster on I think the CCI.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
IS MY UNDERSTANDING ALL 17 MAG IS MADE BY CCI. LOTS ON THE MARKET AND NOT HARD TO GET. PRICE HAS COME DOWN ALSO.
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0 -
buy the Hornady , CCI sucks , shot both kinds thru 3 different guns now , the CCI stuff just will not shoot as good as the Hornady , CCI as a rule run 1 to 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards where as the Hornady ammo would shoot well under an 1" at 100 yards 0 -
I believe Hornady is coming out with a new 20 grain v-max
this year. It is also my understanding that CCI produces
all 17 HMR ammo.0 -
I've got supplies of the current Hornady, CCI, and Remington loads at home right now. Remington uses the Hornady V-Max bullet with a different color tip, as was previously mentioned. The Hornady groups the best, followed closely by the Remington. The CCI stuff isn't horrible, but it's nowhere near the Hornady.
I'm just waiting for something to come along that doesn't frag out quite as bad, but is as consistent as the 17 gr Hornady loads.0 -
The Hornady and Remington loads are essentially the very same offering. Both use the 17 grain VMax with different colored tips. On the approximately 20 different 17HMR's I've either owned or mounted scopes on and shot in, the Hornady and Remington shoot very, very similar! My 17VS and the Savage 93 HB both shoot .5-.7 at 100 with either. The Savage Striker for some reason seems to have a preference for the Remington! As far as the CCI goes, I have yet to find a gun that prefers it to the other two! Velocities on all three are 2700+ from the Marlin. The Striker 10" barrel gives 2325+! The newest offering is from Federal using the Speer TNT and I've only done one test with it but it seems to be better and more consistent than the CCI stuff!!! But not equal to the Hornady! If the CCI had been the first available ammo for the HMR then it wouldn't be nearly as popular! When you pick up an out of the box rimfire and shoot groups approaching 1/2 inch(best is actually .443/5 shots@ 100) and then shoot 8/10tentghs 200 yard groups it kind of amazes you! The CCI has never turned in any results approaching these!!! I have never shot any varmints using the CCI (over 100 groundhogs and untold crows with the Hornady's and Remingtons) but have a friend who has and he says the terminal performance(DRT effect) is lacking with the CCI also!!! GHD echos my findings with the .17 HMR ammo offerings. The original Hornady 17 gr V-Max loading is still the best and is even the cheapest where I buy. The new Hornady 20 gr is supposed to be available sometime in September. Might try a box to see how they are.

Rumor is that WINCHESTER is going to bring out an offering in the 17HMR. My feeling on that is that they won't use either the VMax 17 grain or the Speer TNT! If they bring one out it will be something different. What would be great would be a 20-22 grain pill with the accuracy of the VMax(Sierra Matches come to mind) with the expansion characteristics of the Hornady Spire points! Accuracy plus a little more penetration prior to dissapating all it's energy! GHD 0 -
Might want to check this site out My brother and I found some stats from some pretty thorough testing http://www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm
