Polishing a gloss stock finish
I have recently purchased online a new forend and buttstock for my Remington 870. Both are premium wood with cut checkering and gloss finish.
Although both appear unused, there are considerable scuff marks in the finish that I'd like to buff out. Since they have that Remington gloss finish, I'm concerned about how to polish it without removing it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Rick

If just swirls and such try some car paste wax and elbow grease or a power buffing wheel like used on a vehicle......you'll be surprised.......and it's probably already laying around the house..........[8D] 0 -
Remmington has finish for sale on their web site.

I occurred to me to use the paste wax, just wanted some validation. I expected someone to say toothpaste too, I hear it's just gritty enough for small jobs like this.
As for the blemishes, it's mostly small superficial scratches on the buttstock, but on the forearm, someone took some very fine sandpaper and attempted to dull the finish. Good thing it was only a half-hearted try, hardly noticable.
If the paste wax doesn't work, I'll give the Remington stuff a try.
Thanks!!!

Use paste wax -- not rubbing compound which has abrasives in it for removing oxidation from paint......good luck.......[8D] 0 -
I've had excellent luck over the years with Meguiars Mirror Glaze. Its available at Auto Supplies.

Also a bit off topic. I have an 870 that belonged to my father. I'd guess that it would be one of the earliest runs and has a ribbed forearm that I'd like to refinish. The buttstock has been replaced by a more recent one though and I'd like to get one to match the forearm. Anyone know what the early buttstocks looked like?
Thanks!
P.S. It's getting reblued right now so I don't have the serial# handy.0
