Winchester 70 pre-64 sight
I recently bought a Winchester 70 pre-64. It is the standard .30-06 with monte carlo stock, serial number 306,2**. The rear sight is missing and I would like to have the correct one. I am told it was made in 1954 and the rear sight should be either a Lyman 16B or Marble 69 folding leaf. The Lyman 16B is still available new from places like Midway. Would this new 16B fit? and would it be exactly the same as one from 1954? Thanks!

I think 1954 was a transition year to the folding leaf sight and both that sight and the fixed buckhorn Winchester 22G with elevator can be found on Mod 70's of that year. They really became standard in 1955 when new caliburs were added to the featherweight. The folding leaf will be less expensive and the 22G more nostalgic as it was the period sight for many years before that. Whichever one you like to shoot through is probably "period correct".
