reliability of a Mil-Spec .45?
What kind of reliability can I expect from a Mil-Spec 1911 .45acp as long as I use FMJ rounds?I know this design is supposed to be legendary for its reliability but I have also heard some bad things.I am wondering pretty much if this plat form would give me a higher level of reliability than say something like a Glock pistol.I dont mind using FMJ only if thats what I need to do to get the highest level of reliabilty from the gun. What should I expect though? Thanks.

Good heavens man who told you that. The .45 auto is the yardstick by which all the others are measured. The Glock is known for its plastic frame which is easier to maintain (Won't rust). I personally have about 9 or 10 .45s around here in some form or another and I can tell you that they are VERY reliable. I have a Mk4 series 70 that I bought in 1983 that has never jammed on me and we are talking thousands of rounds. I really don't know how many. I have trusted my life in the executive protection business with two in particular and I can tell you I wouldn't use anything else. Now the Glock people will tell you that they are reliable. I have personally shot the Model 19 (9mm) and I can attest to that model's accuracy. I can also tell you that over the course of about 5 years I have seen three of them Blow up . The dreaded Kaboom that Glock is famous for. These have occurred at the range and thankfully, minor injuries so far. I would not own a Glock for that reason alone and when someone offers to let me shoot theirs I respectfully say "Thank you no". All of my 1911 platforms are reliable and I see no reason to change. 230 fmj is not the best round for defence but if you are worried about reliablity that is as good as it gets. What kind of mil spec pistol are you planning to purchase? 0 -
you don't mention the mfg. of your "MilSpec." and that might help with addressing the reliability aspect since one "spec." is not necessairly the same as another.
Put another way ... there is some real junk out there that is being touted as "MilSpec." when really it's nothing more than stuff assembled from a "bucket of parts" some of which are of questionable origin.

Im looking at the Springield Armory WW2 G.I parkerized Mil-Spec version right now. They look to be pretty nice and BASIC.The price is a big factor as I cant afford a Colt,so this one seem's to be my next best bet for a reliable auto-loader. 0 -
Also are there some other good American made mil-spec 1911 auto-loaders out there you would suggest more than the Springfield Armory model that are in the same price range?$450.00 and under? 0 -
I Own a spring 1911 Mill-Spec, same as you described. I only have had one problem with it, it would sometimes fail to chamber the round completely(leaving the slide not fully foward), this was fixed with the addition of a Wilson Shok-Buff system that included a full length guide rod and two different # springs(I use the heavy spring). Also this is with the Winchester White Box ammo.

Get you one of the 1927 Argentine .45's. Not the Ballistar, but the Colt licenced weapon. EXACTLY a prewar Colt through and through. Even better because of the Swedish steel used for the slide. Still pretty cheap. 0 -
I THINK YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THOSE 1911'S FOR THE TIME BEING...WAIT UNTIL THEY HAVE A FEW MORE OF THEM OUT THERE SO WE CAN TELL IF THEY ARE REALLY RELIABLE.

Springfield MilSpec. is a good value pistol and it should give you years of good reliable service.

I don't want to be mean or talk down to no one but how many is enough??? There is so many out now that it is not funny. I have seen many of the springfield mil spec's that have shoot 1000+ rounds before they jamed. Also the price is right on them. After I purchesed mine, I add somthing to it every pay day till it was a fully custom gun. The reason I started with a mil spec is because it was cheaper new than many of the used guns.

Any so called Mil spec 1911s should have forged frames and slides; not cast or machined from billets. 0
